HP Laptop problems again...

<div class="IPBDescription">DVD tray keeps popping open.</div>So, I've already sent my notebook back to HP twice for repairs... Now, the DVD tray keeps opening, seemingly randomly.

The activity light lights up, and the motor starts turning like it's trying to read a disk, even if no disk is present. I have done a virus scan, there's noting apparently wrong.

This is getting really old, while typing this, it has opened 7 times...

Dangit, I read the title as "HP Lovecraft problems again..." At least when I read your post I got some otherworldly stuff to satisfy my needs. Certainly sounds like the thing's posessed.

I take it that you installed Linux and crapped it up again? Or this did this with/without windows too?

It's windows. I haven't actually got Linux installed on it.

Coca Cola is getting pretty aggressive in their free can holder campaign :o

You tried using a Linux livecd to see if it still happens then?

Sounds like a hardware malfunction or someone playing pranks on you. (Trojan)

My first guess is someone has remote access to your laptop and can open the tray at will (happened to me once, long long ago).

It happens when I have the wi-fi switch turned off, and I have scanned for viruses, I'll try the livecd thing, but I think it's hardware. Crappy HP hardware...

    You sir are correct.

This is something I have seen a few times on different laptops (even on macs) and each time the soloution was to get the dealer to replace the busted CD drive.

check the retention clip/spring/apparatus. it's probably shaking itself loose whenever it spins up.

on a side note, why does everyone blame the software? he *said* it was an HP (ohsnap)

I work on hp laptops for a living, open the cd tray and pull the left side of the cd tray face plate off (pull straight out, hold onto the tray though) If it still pops open, you need to get a new CD tray. If it dont, look at the faceplate since its causing the problems and make sure the plasic is not warped or something to push the button.

Thankyou Caboose for letting me know to never ever buy a HP laptop.

Have you had to ship your Dell in for repairs twice?
