<div class="IPBDescription">gamasutra book review</div>Dated from december, I don't know why I missed that <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20061212/brathwaite_01.shtml" target="_blank">Gamasutra </a>article.
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->...
Following the book review is the first chapter of Brathwaite's book, "Defining Sex," in which she introduces the topic of sex in video games, and categorizes it by its usage, its range and its purpose. Brathwaite also looks at sex in the industry outside of games themselves, including a history of E3's infamous "booth babes," sex as used in game advertising, and unintended sex in games, be it emergent, modded, or hacked

Finally, something that brings together my two loves: outdated articles and Browser ICE posting something from Gamasutra, <i>again</i>.

I want to marry you.
To not knowing anything about Star Wars.
He's already married.

I only married her to cover up that you and her are having an affair, remember? Her parents don't approve of you so she and I had a sham marriage so you two could live happily forever.

LOL !
Is the thesis of the article that sex sells in video games because most videogamers are big starwars nerds who can't score?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
that would be my guess

Big Star Wars nerds don't score... however video gamers do.

If video gamers didn't score we would be in for a serious population reduction soon. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> I don't know many guys in my generation that don't play games at least casually.
As for the article: sex sells. Period. As I'm driving along the road am I more likely to look at the billboard with a can of soda, or the billboard with a can of soda held by a half naked woman? It doesn't matter that I have a women that already takes care of that area, I still find my eyeballs drawn to the second add.

Indeed. Saying "It's just used in video games" is silly. Actually, video games use sex as an advertisement the least.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Depends on the game and venue but in general I'd agree with that.
Still, videogames with sexual content does attract most types of gamers.

I'm not so sure about that. You may be looking at the commercial but are you thinking "that's one delicious looking soda" or "that's one hot looking guy/gal"?

90% of commercials don't try to get you to go out and buy that soda right now. They just want the word "Pepsi" to be in your head so next time you're in the store and you're looking at soda, something is going to say "Pepsi" and you go ahead and buy that.

Too bad they advertised with Britney Spears. Pepsi probably has nasty skank sweat in it.
If that's what makes it so good, then BRING ON THE SKANK!

Cola suuuuuucks. Root beer my son.

Sounds more like they're trying to make you think of soft drinks the next time you peruse the adult section. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />
There's also a rather large segment of the population with an aversion to being marketed to; I wonder if it's even a net benefit once your product is already well established and well known.

I have always wondered that my self. Like coke/pepsi, 2 of the largest brand names in the US, and sellign a product (Cola in general) that is apparently a staple for a good percentage of Americans (Personaly can't stand the stuff, I like water).
The explenation that is always given is that they want Pepsi/Coke to be on your mind when you are buying soda, and I am sure that it probably works on me, if I was going to order a cola I would order Coke, not Pepsi, and I am sure there are people that are reversed. I know if I am ordering a Lemon Lime soda I will always say Sprite, but will take any others.
But does this matter?
If you are in a resturant you likely do not have a choice of sodas. If you are in a supermarket you might have a choice, but at that point most poeple have a prefferance based on taste. So what does mind share get them?
For other things I am willing to bet that it works.
If I am looking for eyedrops I look for Visene (and then buy generic).
If I am looking for serious headache pills I will look for Exedrine (and then buy generic).
And I am willign to bet that there are enough peopel out there that will just stop and buy the name that they know.
But I still don't get it for the huge name companies like Coke/Pepsi.

Yeah I agree about this. I mean, chocolate M&Ms get advertized a good amount. M&Ms! Who doesn't know about them? But still, they must know what they are doing. Sadly, advertizing does have a strong effect on some people. Allow me to relate this disturbing story:
I was driving with one of my friends when an add for Wendys came on. She immediately said "oh my god I need some of that, stop at the next one". That's some serious advertizing return!
She obviously already knew about and liked Wendys but the add just made her think about it more.
