What music player do you use?

I currently use iTunes, but I'm finding that its completely hogging humongous amounts of system resources- enough that it could take my 7900GT, and actually make WoW run at 10-15 frames per second. Note that this is with Coverflow on- so, frankly, Apple needs to step up performance on iTunes. This is disastrously bad.

But, what alternatives are there for me? Note that my 2 most important things are sorting by album, and a clean aesthetic(oddly, this is one spot where apple is completely behind- iTunes is butt ugly). So, if you mention Winamp and you have a good skin for it- specify it for me.

Also, anything that has a Coverflow imitation, or at least allows me to look at the covers while I go down the album list, would be nice to see.

Edit: Also, if its got podcast support, that'd be frickin' sweet.

I never actually <i>see</i> my music player so I use Winamp because I don't care if it's ugly, but Foobar (or Foobar2000 or whatever) is highly customizable/sleek and lots of people love how it looks. Plus it doesn't hog memory at all. Not even a smidge.

As for WA skins, anything from <a href="http://www.studiotwentyeight.com/skins.htm" target="_blank">kol</a> or <a href="http://heylove.deviantart.com/gallery/" target="_blank">heylove</a> are win.

5.34 apparently has some bad security.
    5.35 Hogs resources like Vista.

A very old version of WinAmp with a very old skin called <a href="http://www.afterdawn.com/general/desktop.cfm" target="_blank">Black Dawn</a>. There used to be a 1.1 version but it's no longer available for whatever reason.

    At work I use <a href="http://www.memlo.net/gallery/steelthis.htm" target="_blank">Steel This Amp</a>.

These are the only two skins I've ever seen that don't look like complete garbage.

I use winamp because I like to be able to quickly and easily search for any song, should it be required. I just use the default skin because...well, I don't watch my music player, so I don't really care if it doesn't look "freakin' awesome"...plus you can turn on the preset control+alt+[other key] to easily perform play/stop/change song things, no matter what you're doing.

It uses about 16.5mb of RAM or something on my laptop...but I'm not particularily sure if that's small or big.

I've avoided Quicktime and iTunes ever since they were packaged together, because Apple can kiss my [expletive].

I use Winamp 5. The library is just perfect for me and since I've used it to rate most of my collection I am reluctant to change. The global hotkeys are also a crucial feature. I like to use my own skin called <a href="http://www.winamp.com/skins/details/142212" target="_blank">Impulse</a> (go figure), but when I need a little extra processing power classic skins always work.

I've only ever had that problem if I don't shut down the program properly, e.g. I have it running and just turn computer off at mains.

If I still could, I would be using that, but the asshats had to lock Canada out from it. Damn RIAA or international copyright laws or whatever.

Thus I use winamp with the default skin. I've turned on global hotkeys so I never even look at it.
  • HydraHydra Join Date: 2003-06-14 Member: 17366Members, Reinforced - Shadow
Winamp. Default skin, the global hotkeys are the main reason I never bother looking for another one. I tried foobar, didn't really do it for me. WMP is for videos when I am playing games, not music tbh. It is only used then because for some reason it is the only player I can get to not have graphical issues with videos + full screen game.

Actually I selected the whitish color scheme for the modern winamp skin but otherwise default. Foxytunes is indeed winner as well, I love that plugin.

Winamp is clearly the best player around, its user friendly, good looking and dosent screw you around like he owns your computer like another certain program... *Cough* iTunes *Cough*

    Winamp uses 4,5 mb

    iTunes CONSUMES 10 mb

iTunes and Quicktime/Realplayer etc is the work of the devil. It should be banned from all homes!

I love foobar2000. too many players don't offer any advanced options. foobar2000 on the other hand offers too many. It is extremely customizable to the point of confusing new users. I also use columnsui (as well as several other components) and made my own minimalist skin/configuration. I will always keep it minimalist though since that is what most attracted me to foobar2k. It uses very few resources (if you don't load it with useless components) so on my crappy old computer i was able to listen to music while playing counter-strike without losing fps. You can set practically any function to any hotkey, global or otherwise, not just the standard playback controls. I also use it to convert songs to mp3 if they don't work with my ipod, move and rename files, mass tag songs, and sync my music library with my ipod with the foo_dop component (no itunes ftw!) The downside is that it may take a while to get comfortable with it.

i never liked winamp just because it's shareware
