windows sux - hijackthis.log
Lets just say when i first installed this new version of windows a lot of features were disabled in it/ i also disabled and my PF Usage was at 80MB.

I've only installed 2 drivers and now its at

130mb PF Usage
Also i have the same exact amount of system processes under my task manager as the install, nothing new running in the background that "shows Up" on task manager.

-file indexing is turned off
-messenger is turned off
-hibernation
the works

why is my PF usage still so high? any suggestions on what else i can disable to lower it?

Running processes:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe

Also would it hurt if i got rid of these? or are these critical processes. All it looks like are bookmarks IMO

Those first four are just different values in IE's options that certain hijacks might, well, hijack. They won't have any performance impact, so it's your call.

As for the page file, what drivers did you install? ATI's Catalysts are known to consume serious amounts of memory, so maybe those nVidia drivers act similarly. Or, it could be something new running out of the svchost, so check to see how much RAM it's using, and then you might want to see what services are actually running (and through what executables).

I'm just a taskman sort of optimizer, so the most in-depth I ever get is services, processes, and the registry. To most people, that's involved, but the internet is amazingly full of people tweaking things more low-level or buried in the operating system than I thought the user could influence. A few should be hanging around here...

These tweaks will help you. They are some I use on my own PC and configuring my gameservers:

DISCLAIMER - Please remember to back up your registry before attempting any registry tweaks. If you screw up your install, it's your fault, not mine...

This tweak lets you boost your overall performance by tweaking the windows swap file. I'm assuming you all have at least 256mb of RAM, if you don't, please don't attempt this or your PC will actually get slower.

1) Select "Run", then "Start", and then type in "msconfig.exe"
2) Select the "SYSTEM.INI" tab
3) Expand the "386enh" folder.
4) Highlight "386enh" then click the new button on the right hand side.
5) Enter the following command "ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1"
4) Click "OK" and reboot windows for the changes to take effect

The Registry

Before you edit the Registry, please back it up by opening "regedit" from the run menu. Then select "File" and then "Export". Make sure you choose the "all" button for the export range and remember where you have saved the backup, because you could very well end up needing it...

This tweak will boost your memory performance by fine tuning it. Again you need at least 256mb RAM for this.

1) Go to "Start", then "Run", and then type in "Regedit"
2) Locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
3) Double Click "DisablePagingExecutive"in the right hand window, select "Decimal" and put a 1 in the . This allows windows to keep data in memory instead of paging sections of RAM to the hard drive, Click OK
4) Double Click "LargeSystemCache", select "Decimal", and put a 1 in the Value Data field. This allows XP kernel to run in memory and improves system performance a lot by reducing important OS disk writes and reads. Click OK

This tweak will speed up your disk cache.

1) Create a New "Dword" by right clicking in the right hand display of the "Memory Management" Folder.
2) Once the "Dword" is created, name it "IOPageLockLimit".
3) Double click it and select "Hexadecimal", and put the relevant value according to how much RAM you have - 256MB: Set it to 10000, 512MB or more set it to 40000. Click OK

This tweak will decrease boot time and make XP a lot faster.

1) Still in the "Memory Management" folder, expand the "PrefetchParameters" sub folder.
3) Double Click "EnablePrefetcher", set it to "Decimal" and put a 3 in the Value Data field
4) Click "OK" and reboot windows for the changes to take effect.

So you've done some registry editing to improve the performance of windows. I've grouped these together as they don't require any searching through the registry to complete, as they are all based in the same folder. Rebooting windows at this point should enable you to sense an improvement in it once you load back in, and you should also see reduced boot times.

Now we're going to re-enter the registry for some more tweaks...

This tweak will reduce the CPU strain that applications create.

1) Click start, run, and type in regedit in the box
2) From the drop down menus, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
3) Navigate to SYSTEM
4) Navigate to CurrentControlSet
5) Navigate to Control
6) Navigate to PriorityControl
7) Click right inside the right hand box and select New-> DWORD Value
8) Type IRQ8Priority in the box
9) Right click on the new DWORD IRQ8Priority
10) Click Modify
11) Type 1 into the Value data field
12) Click OK

This tweak improves NTFS performance and thus speeds up your Hard Drive.

1) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
2) Navigate to SYSTEM
3) Navigate to CurrentControlSet
4) Navigate to Control
5) Navigate to Filesystem
6) Click right inside the white box and select New-> DWORD Value
7) Type NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate in the box
9) Right click right on the new DWORD NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate
10) Click Modify
11) Type 1 into the Value data field
12) Click OK

Free up memory still held by programs after they are closed by forcing the system to unload .dll's

1) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
2) Navigate to SOFTWARE
3) Navigate to Microsoft
4) Navigate to Windows
5) Navigate to Current Version
6) Navigate to Explorer
7) Click right inside the white box and select New-> DWORD Value
8) Type AlwaysUnloadDLL in the box
9) Click right on the new DWORD AlwaysUnloadDLL
10) Click Modify
11) Type 1 into the Value data field
12) Click OK and close out of the registry editor.

ok well i did all this and since its a clean install and a lot of things have already been disabled the reboot time was already super fast

im thinking my reboot time now snags and hangs about .5 seconds longer then before i did these tweaks

but this tweaks did drop my PF Usage down 35mb from over 130MB PF Usage, so thanks mate <3
