Did anyone play Star Wars Galaxies?

<div class="IPBDescription">can you explain what 'killed' it?</div>I played SWG for at least one free trial period and probably a little bit of subscription time too. It was fun, and I forget why I didn't subscribe. Probably because I was poor and unemployed at the time. but I digress.
I always hear people saying how horribly SOE messed up SWG. But I never hear concrete reasons as to how or why. everyone seems to say the game was messed up, but everyone has something different to say on how it was 'ruined'. I hear about some Combat Upgrade which dumbed down combat or something. I hear about how the introduction of Jedi ruined it (though they don't really say how). I hear all sorts of things. Does anyone have the 'inside scoop' on how the game was ruined? I've always been curious, from an anthropological perspective <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> how could the developers be so out of touch with what the players wanted?

Basicly they cut out everytihn that made the game unique in an attempt to make it more popular (only problem was that the only reason it still had a folowing was b/c of said unique features)
They also pretty much destroyed items, let jedi run rampant (Dammit! KILL 'EM ALL.) And, well, just generally made the game a LOT like WoW, where as it used to be like D&D (The original Tabletop Game)
It's a shame the game no longer exists in the state I remembered.
The Entertainer profession's death led to mass unhappiness.

My character's name was Dance Commando. I used to participate in rebel raids (we had some good 'uns too), but my combat profession at the time was Pistoleer, which seemed to be useless at everything (maybe I just sucked at finding good pistols), so generally I just stuck one of my dance macros on in the middle of the big fire fights and laughed.
I was also a ranger, which meant I could set up those *awesome* camps. Which was the only reason I went into ranger.
Oh and towards the end of my subscription period I started putting ranks in to Smuggler, so I could shoot people in the nuts (which was an actual special attack of smuggler. I think the branch was called "Dirty Fighting").
I really miss the old SW:G. I had fun times on there. I remember one time I saw this really short character in stormtrooper armour, so I said "Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper" to him, thinking it would at least get a "lol".
He followed me around for two hours calling me ######. Was hilarious. Good times.
<b>Why</b> did they make all those changes? As far as I know, player ratings were pretty much steady (increasing a bit) and then they bought in the combat upgrade, and there was a decline, and then they did that total overhaul thing, with being able to just be a jedi from the start. I logged in on a friend's account recently and I must've saw about 3-4 people actually playing.

There's a group of people who are working on a reverse engineered server for pre-overhaul SW:G. They have a semi-working version already and sometimes players are asked to log on and help them test it.
I'm tempted to get a hold of a copy when it gets further along.
for those of you who actually have the client, you might like to check this out:

Yeah but that things still waaaaay far away from being viable. Maybe sometime in the future we'll get SWG back the way it ought to be but for now that's a long shot.
Don't people get sued for putting up private servers? I mean, I don't want to be bashing, but this is Sony we're talking about.

It's technically legal, since you have to buy a copy of the game from Sony to play on the private servers. The private servers, however, aren't asking for money (They do ask for donations, but it's not required) so they can't be charged with making a profit off another company's product. And, the only reason you pay a monthly fee is for maintenance and development.

QFFT.
Usually there's something in the EULA (of course you read it!) about setting up third-party servers or reverse engineering the program. Being totally unversed in law of that sort, I don't know whether a license agreement like that would be overstepping its legal bounds.

The emu project is quite widely known by now, I'd be quite surprised if SOE haven't heard of it. And as far as I know, they haven't received any warnings to stop.
Knowing SOE, they'll probably wait until the emu project is finished, then see how well it does. If it starts doing well, they'll rush in and have it shut down.... then quietly revert the real SW:G servers to the original game a few weeks later.
I was under the impression that while SoE did mess up a lot, the total overhaul at the end was done by George Lucas and co? What I'd heard was that they'd torn SWG from SoE deciding it wasn't star-wars enough and did their own take on it which is what the current incarnation is now :o

Ahahahaahahahahaaha no. Lucasarts has always had a hand in it but you can bet the game design is 100% SOE.
And why do people sometimes not capitalize the o? It stands for "Online." SOE. Not SoE.
because the 'o' looks smaller in the picture and I'm far too used to talking about "Sony of Europe" thanks to my console gaming background rather than "Sony Online Entertainment" most of the time <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

SEGA of Europe, much?
