(virus?)
so i think i have a virus. im using AVG free edition, but i cant scan for anything because anytime i open avg it closes. it doesnt crash, it closes. anytime avg is on the screen or in the task bar, it automatically closes after about 2 seconds. even the uninstall and install things close after 2 seconds.

i know its closing because when i uninstalled and reinstalled, i would click 'continue' really quick to get to the part where it was installing, and it would still try and close, but instead of closing it would pop up with "are you sure you want to cancel?"

i got it uninstalled and reinstalled by quickly clicking through, but the problem is still there. i cant even go to the avg website, or firefox will close. this is the second time im writing this by the way because that very thing happened.

i dont know if this problem occurs with other virusscans, i know my spybot and adaware work fine but they dont find anything.

You do have a virus, I would try using one of the free online virus scanners. Spybot and Adaware aren't virus scanners, so they won't help. Also, try running AVG with your computer in safemode.

Yeah, it detected an annoying piece of spyware i've got that nothing else seems to be able to pick up. Only thing is, it takes 8 hours to scan my hard drives. Last time I tried it firefox crashed after 6 hours and I don't have the patience to try again...

Can anyone recommend any downloadable spyware/virus checkers that are good? I'm using a trial of NOD32 right now but even that can't pick up whatever it is i've got.

Open up taskmanager and start ending every application that looks suspicious, then try opening AVG each time until you end the correct program.

Im surprised that it still didn't work under safe-mode...

This one is pretty clearly running a trojan program or something of the sort, so it's likely it would show up in the manager.

Have you downloaded/installed anything strange lately?

Did you try google searching for the symptoms? There is probably some program made specifically to remove this virus.

Go get a free virus scanner called Avast, when you install it, it will ask if you want to do a boot time scan. Answer yes. This will do a virus scan before Windows has even loaded, meaning whatever trojan/virus it is can not stop it from running. Hopefully you can get it downloaded, let me know!

I had this exact same problem a few years ago, and I would simply add my support to Xyth's advice. I was able to clean my computer by opening my taskmanager and shutting down a suspicious process that only popped up when I tried to virus scan.
