<div class="IPBDescription">compass</div>I think a compass would be essential in the hud - its not going to be easy navigating brand new maps.

If marines have a compass, can be small in the corner, or one of those bar type ones you get in mechwarrior games across the top or bottom of the screen.

That way commander can say - "keep moving south to the res point"

Thats not a bad idea, or maybe come up with your own compess system.
    Dunno
    Just as long as we keep sector names and waypoints <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

The in-hud minimap already shows the direction your player is facing relative to the map. Abolute direction doesn't make sense from a game perspective, or from an immersion perspective. Oh, and compasses don't work in space <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    ...that, and marines have a wonderful thing called a map. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I would appreciate an absolute direction hud minimap with a 'north' pointing arrow included.
or maybe a togglable (my new favorite word) compass like in system shock 2?

well i still think it would be nice, i've never found the minimap helpful for directions, as you can't see far enough, and it doesnt draw a straight line from where you are to your waypoint .
would be much easier if the map rotated. or if a compass told you which way you are facing.

actually ill go as far and say that the only time i look at the minimap is when im building a structure and want to see if any motiontracked aliens are sneaking up behind me.

If anything, there should be a HUD improvement that gives marines a visual indicator without bringing up a map. The map gets in the way, waypoints aren't used nearly enough, and sometimes you just need to know the general direction of a part of the map. So just have some key you can press that gives you info on screen with:

    1. Room names, furthest ones have a different colour than nearest ones.
    2. Outlines of marines nearby - sort of like scent of fear/parasite, except for marines to see other marines.

The feature would be toggled sort of like the minimap.
