original title: "Der Untergang" german movie about the last days of hitler in the fhrer-bunker
Der Untergang/Downfall was a highly controversial movie (in Germany particularly) for portraying Hitler as what many of us don't want to view him as, but he ultimately was: A human. Bruno Ganz' performance as Adolf Hitler is chillingly convincing.

Hmm. The text is indeed over in the funny camp. Yet I can understand what they are saying so I'm in conflict <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
Anyway. The location they recorded some of the the movie (st Petersburg?). In "the making of der Untergang" Bruno said that when he was walking around the filming locations (as Hitler), the people living there, well the elder people that actually endured WW2, had a terrified/angry/confused look on their face...
Bruno didn't feel very welcome there, I guess <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
Haha that was great, the forum topics on the right side of the page are even funnier hahaha (had a cuss word for every topic, i should had screen caped it XD)
Those of you who don't speak german actually have an advantage here. Do you have any idea how hard it is to follow the subtitles when people are saying something completely different?

The city is surrounded and the fighting troops are in trouble and Hitler believes his General, Felix Steiner, will come through and rescue the city, but the generals tell him that Steiner couldn't mobilize enough men. Hitler orders the lower ranked officers out of the room. Hitler gets all mad because he thinks everyone's against him and purposelly not following orders. (I like the comedy in "you think you're generals because you spent years at a military academy only to learn how to hold a knife and fork"). Then it's all 'the war is lost, but I'm not leaving Berlin, I'd rather shoot myself in the head'.
Pretty funny matchup with the subtitles anyway <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> .
I didn't find it particularily hard to block out the German, though; I find it rather difficult to concentrate on reading something and listen to what someone is saying simultaneously (when it's in two languages) unless I notice that they match up or are opposites. I've got no idea what you guys are talking about <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> .

Not to derail the thread any further, but I recommend seeing the movie (however, if you don't speak German, I don't believe it has ever (or most likely will ever) be dubbed, so you're stuck with subtitles); I also recommend - if you speak German - to listen to <a href="http://www.yle.fi/player/player.jsp?name=El%E4v%E4+arkisto%2F00376_3" target="_blank">the only non-speech recording of hitler</a> ever made...pretty much what Bruno Ganz had to work with for finding out how Hitler spoke in personal conversations.
Here's something interesting. I stumbled onto the factoid that the Germans used methamphetamine as a stimulant in the military and that Hitler's personal physician Dr. Morell may have given him daily meth injections. And it's certainly tempting to say that this explains a lot but the doses may have been too small for the usual effects(euphoria, delusions of grandure, obsessiveness with repetitive tasks etc.).
I then further stumbled onto the factoid that methamphetamine is used to treat ADHD and narcolepsy(!) and apparently one of the more effective drugs for ADHD sufferers but many patients refuse to take it and doctors refuse to subscribe it.
It's apparently fairly easily produced by addicts using ephedrine from cold medication, lithium from batteries, hydrocloric acid, ammonia and some other gunk. That's kind of troubling considering it's much stronger than cocaine, lasts longer and widely considered one of the most dangerous drugs.

Requires a lot of each ingredient though which makes it hard to produce easily in decent quantities.
I loved it when they started talking bout the PS3, then they showed the girl outside crying harder and was comforted by saying "Don't worry, he's not that desperate"
