I just recently got a new laptop to play games including NS, and it just so happens this computer doesnt have a mic built into it. Instead of just buying an external mic i was looking into buying a headset..
So what headset should i get and why? Price isnt really a problem as long as it is a good value, i prefer under $100 though.
Thanks in advance

Point of View gaming headset. I got it from komplett (it was hard to find) for about £30, which is what, about $55-60? Sound quality is good for games and is awesome for music, too. The mic can be detatched, so you can put whatever microphone you want in it's place, but the standard one is pretty much perfect.
It even comes with its own carry case. How awesome is that?!
Most comfy headset. Ever.

seriously though, those are obviously open ear and while they look comfy you're probably going to want to keep the sweet gaming goodness blasting into your ears segregated from your environment so as not to upset the wife, parents, dog etc.
circumaural, if possible, are the best bet in a good headphone.

fail, complete and total fail.
I just (month ago) bought a pair of these (to replace my old Audio 90s) and they are probably the worst set I have ever had.
The sound quality is ok.
The noise cancellation is great.
They are incredibly uncomfterable.
If your don't have the right head type (like me) the mic is at eye level (and non adjustable).
The Mic Mute switch is kinda flimsy (constantly gets flipped by accident).
Apparently they feel great if they fit your head/ear type, but, alot of people don't have said head type.
I miss my Plantronics Audio 90s

I also have this headset.
And it failed the first day.
I currently have it wrapped around my neck for the mic use and have my headphones on my head.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I just tried turning it again and now it works.
It must have just been really stuck when I first got it. I applied a good amount of preasure, but was sorta carful b/c I didn't feel like breaking it outta the box. The box and the book it came with said nothing about it being movable. I just tried it now and it took absolutely zero force to move.
Thanks, that jsut made them suck slightly less. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
still uncomfterable.
Comfy as hell and the mic quality is fantastic.

The headset does not fail, it's your head D:
How exactly do these USB headphones work? Do they take a bitstream over USB? Are they any good?

bah, load of old unnecessary twaddle I say.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Sonic puts one of his feet straight on his computer case. The vibrations transmit up through his leg to give him sound from the games, and he taps with his toe in morse code, which goes through a text-to-speech converter when he wants to talk in Voice Chat. This avoids the "unnecessary twaddle" of headphones and a mic.
Anyway, there's a MUCH cheaper <a href="http://www.phones.com/images/products/hs_sennheiser_pc130.jpg" target="_blank">PC130</a> model, which is basically the same, iirc then it has a bit lower "sound quality" or power or whatever behind it, not as long a cord as the PC135 iirc, no cord wind-up thingy, and of course, no external USB soundcard.
the site I get the PC130 picture from states a price of £32, making it roughly $60, well within your budget :S the PC135 is like double.. £60.
<a href="http://www.headphoneworld.com/product_details.php?item_id=250&category_id=176&category_name=Microphone&group_name=headphones" target="_blank">Sennheiser PC151</a>. I have the previous model ( PC150 ). Comfy, robust, good quality sound.

i have a 150 and it is quite possibly the most awesome set i have ever owned (beats all the plantronics, logitech and altec-lansing sets i've gone through)
Sennheiser PC135's here, awesome headset. Despite the fact that I have to wear it backwards to know whats going on. If I wear it the 'correct' way round, I keep turning to the wrong side when I hear stuff. Weird.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Erhm... why don't you just reverse the sound :/?
And aye, Sennheiser in general is <3.

...you can do that? :o
You should go to a doctor about this btw. Left/Right differentiation problems are often a sign of a deeper problem. Have you always had this problem?
Anyway, you should be able to do it in your soundcard settings (if you have any besides the standard windows one that is..)
or it could just be a crossed wire somewhere
if your soundcard supports it. The typical way to do it is with that speaker positioning gui where you drag speakers around. Some cards have a 'reverse stereo' tick box. Bog standard cards won't support this though, but most of the onboard 5.1 sound should.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
£15 SB Audigy2, I'm guessing it probably wont xD

Nah it's just gaming with this headset I get it. I think the reason is because when I first got it, I was used to having my mic on the right so I just put it on that way. Didn't help that I'd been playing with it for 3 years before I noticed that I'd actually been wearing it back to front xD the problem is that I'm just used to it, same way it screws you over if you play with WASD if you're used to arrow keys. Same reason my right thumb twitches randomly when I'm playing unless I'm actually doing something. Gaming quirks.

I got home at 11 and I went on youtube and it started. If I hang the headphones around my neck, it won't play. But if I reverse the headphones and THEN hang them on my neck, it works...
Then sometimes it would play at a volume that's 10% of what I put the settings at.
Any idea what's the problem? Or is it time to get new ones?
It can probably be fixed if you know your way around cords - but it's mucho easier just to get a new one ;P
