A game that is awesome.

The base gameplay is focused around the art of movement, meaning moving, speed and tricks play a big part in the gameplay. Besides this, mapcontrol, aim, teamplay and fragging skills play their role too. For the movement we've basicly looked at four games: Quakeworld (legendary for it's speed), Quake3 CPMA, Jet Set Radio and Speedball.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
It's one of the better games I've played lately, totally freeware based off the Quake 2 source code (but you'd never think it), with a competitive game style of play. The movement is amazing, and I think it handles tighter and more spectacularly than Promode (if that's even possible). Great visual style, awesome handling guns, and the maps are all quite well done. And the best part is you can directly import Quake 3/CPMA maps by drag and drop and play them. Like CPMA it has a small but active community, and all in all it's a great game.

Download it, play it, hit me up on XFire at testament2 or on AIM at Faffelol for a game. I approve of Hamachi hosting for trickjump practicing.

I also really recommend CPMA for competition shooter fans.
<a href="http://promode.org" target="_blank">Promode is Promoooooooooode.</a>
Also, here's a good Warsow frag movie. <a href="http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=5928688013532863824&q=warsow+first+contact&total=2&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=1" target="_blank">First Contact</a>

probably best i dont though; 0.30 introduced a client crash for me and it's rare i can play for more than 10 mins :/
excellent DM game- though i wish fewer servers played instagib.

Instagib is a cancer. I got kind of bored of Promode, then an old buddy from it told me about Warsow, but my biggest interest here is the movement. Promode is probably the better frag game, with looser handling.
Evidently your CPMA movement was terrible, because Warsow's movement is actually slower than CPMA's in most cases. Sure you can wall-jump in it (rip more from ut2k4?) but quite literally everything else in the game is <b>exactly</b> the same as Q3 CPMA - apart from the ammo variants, which imo is a stupid idea.
Sure, it's fun. It looks good. But the gameplay is boring compared to CPMA which is basically a LOT better. Warsow just feels bad after CPMA.

CPMA is the better frag game, but tricking feels more satisfying in Warsow, and it has some differences that make it a good alternative. Race mode, for instance, is amazing. Warsow is the one you play for fun, CPMA is what you put time and effort into to learn in and out. That said, movement in Warsow still feels tighter than in CPMA. I'm not sure what it is, but even simple moves feel better in Warsow. CPMA's looser, I suppose.
Also, walljumping started in UT2k3 (and is an awesome addition to ANY game), and the entire dodging system is a reason why Warsow is more interesting for trickjumping. Oh well, both are great games.
So what's required to pick this game up and not get raped over and over and over? Perfect aim? Lightspeed bhop ability? Innate, flawless knowledge of item spawn timers? All of the above? None?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
you need to be slightly above LD50 on your favorite reaction-enhancing drug
perfect aim isn't required- but "snap-to" aiming is. warsow's equivalent of the railgun is weak as hell and nothing to fear- so people with awesome aim won't have the same advantage over you that they would have in other games.
movement (strafehop, bhop, walljump, rocketjump) is crucial- but if you've played NS it should be mostly familiar.
Not really. I learned it all in Promode when I picked it up a little over a year ago and stopped playing. Took me all of 3 days to relearn it for Promode when I picked it up this time. Promode was my first FPS in its style.
the EB (warsow railgun) isnt too bad at all really, if you have the strong ammo. the weak ammo is terrible but if you have strong, an RL/EB combo does a lot of damage.
the main thing i have with warsow is the fact that its incredibly hard to bounce people, or control their movement through weapon use. i mean in cpma you can bounce someone with a rocket, then your LG will actually push them around quite a bit, and you can control where they are. i mean a rocketbounce to lg in cpma is devastating, you can do so much damage. but in warsow it does basically nothing. warsow is basically long range rail picks, your average plasma/nade spam to weaken the other player .... but when it comes down to a 1v1 takedown - its just rocketspam. thats it. you simply cant use the plasma or lg because it doesnt work in warsow. and thats why cpma is better.

I noticed that, too. One of the things in Warsow that caught my eye though was grenades bouncing off jump pads. I'm pretty sure they don't do that in CPMA, and it's an awesome trap at times. In a way, though, it's kind of nice having control of your own movement that doesn't rely on your enemy being a crack shot with LG and RL.
I gotta get back into playing Promode and Warsow... I was starting to get decent for a while, then stopped playing. Finding opponents at low skill in North America is a challenge at best.
The reason?
The weapons are so poor it's unbeleivable. The movement is great, although i just tend to push forward (I only play instagib at our lans so you just gotta shoot first <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> ).
When playing in standard mode we all agree that the weapons feel so under powered, it's crazy, so it's instagib only for me i'm afraid. I find that really evens the playing field out too.
complete /sign
thats also something else it has in common with ut2k3/4 - the weapons just feel gimped. they dont do enough damage by far. a good cpma player can drop a guy with full stacked YA in a matter of 1-2 seconds ... i nwarsow youre looking at 3+ seconds at least. and in ut2k4 perhaps 5+ seconds. fast = fun. dont let me get started on why ut04 fails as a 1v1 game though, we'll be here for decades.
You had me at "instagib." I love instagib. None of this screwing around with ammo or recoil or cone of fire. If you want to kill someone, you shoot them.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I read that and thought, I'm downloading this <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> <3 Instagib.
Instagib is the most worthless, dumbed-down style of gameplay ever introduced to gaming.

HAD the gameplay included a grinding system, I would have crapped my pants.

Not to be snide, but is 1v1 actually something that someone cares about? I mean, like, even just a single person?

1v1 is the most played mode.
So I suppose these Quake-like games make extensive use of it then? How does that work? 2-slot servers? Multi-slot servers, but two people fight while the rest watches (winner fights on I suppose)? Multiple 1v1 pairings fight in multiple instances of the same map?
