HELL YEAH this sounds awesome! How about these for ideas:
The dynamic infestation looked awesome back in that video, but if I remember correctly there was concern that the geometry would get to be too clumpy and cluttered. Well, even if that's not the case, how about using a combination of dynamic geometry AND textures/decals? You could look at a wall and see the bacteria crusting up on the steel even before any organic geometry started growing. This could even be used to let the growth spread through thin walls as well as down corridors. It starts as a patch of texture and then the geometry starts coming through "cracks" or "seams" in the wall. This could also help control the speed at which the growth spreads and keep it looking good. Instead of just slowing down the rate at globs grow, a larger range of change could be seen.
How about some kind of security camera? I know Source has no problems displaying screens and whatnot, but maybe this could be used for a handheld screen? (like a deployable mini camera or watching through a turret to see what's causing problems)
There are a ton of other amazing ideas in this thread already, I hope at least some will make it into the game!
