Lost My Sound Completely: Headphones and Speakers Work!
I've lost my sound and can't figure out why. I have a Creative Audigy Platinum SoundBlaster with the latest drivers, and it just crapped out.
I can generate test sounds through my 5.1 speakers via the Creative Inspire 5.1 Digital 5700 amplifier console, so we know all 6 of them work fine. I can also hear sound from the headphones plugged into the front of the tower. All connections and the soundcard have been checked and reset - nada.
What do you think it could be, and what else can I check?

When you say "all connections and the soundcard have been checked and reset," does that include checking that the soundcard is properly seated in its slot?
See, I could order a Creative 5.1 soundcard dirt cheap, but the Audigy SoundBlaster Platinum I have has the front-of-the-tower panel (the size of a cd-rom panel) with jacks for my headphones. The bad news is this card is no longer available. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
I was getting kernel panics and all kinds of other nastiness until I finally figured that out.
Try using the mobo's onboard sound or a generic sound card or something. That'll tell you if it's a hardware problem or a software glitch.

if reinstalling the drivers and/or finding the hidden unmute button don't work then you've probably burned out a soundcard
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Had this issue just before I re-installed my new hdd last night so I think we can discount the drivers(reinstalled them just to be safe... nada). The hidden mute button evades me.

Something like this happened to me a few months back, it turned out that the PCI slot had died. Try and see if changing the PCI slot will fix your problems.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Is this as simple as moving it up one to a vacant slot? Or is there more involved?

I take it you tried ye olde reboot already? My X-Fi shares a similar problem at times... the card simply ceases to exist as far as XP is concerned, but a simple boot "fixes" it.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Multiple reboots have no effect.
Newer versions of my card are now unavailable from the manufacturer. It is similar to <a href="http://www.buy.com/prod/creative-sound-blaster-audigy2-zs-platinum-sound-card/q/loc/101/10354635.html" target="_blank">this card</a>.

To get onboard working:
Enter your BIOS, find the option, turn it on.
Pretty much BIOS specific.
Involves hammering a certain button at boot (del, F2, etc) should show on screen at boot.
BIOS can be navigated using arrow keys and/or pageup/pagedown keys, changing values is the same.
Said options/instructions should show when inside BIOS.
Moving the card is as simple as said.
Do wish you sound again sir.
What puzzles me is the headphones work off this "bad" soundcard. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />
Didn't see anything in BIOS except OnChip AC97 Controller, which I am clueless about (it was disabled).
All of a sudden it started working... werd. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

Must be something in the water. Same thing happened to me.
