Lost My Sound Completely: Headphones and Speakers Work!

DepotDepot The ModFather Join Date: 2002-11-09 Member: 7956Members
I've lost my sound and can't figure out why. I have a Creative Audigy Platinum SoundBlaster with the latest drivers, and it just crapped out.

I can generate test sounds through my 5.1 speakers via the Creative Inspire 5.1 Digital 5700 amplifier console, so we know all 6 of them work fine. I can also hear sound from the headphones plugged into the front of the tower. All connections and the soundcard have been checked and reset - nada.

What do you think it could be, and what else can I check?

    I know you're pretty old so, hearing aid in? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Common courtesy dictates either TRYING to help or shutting up.

When you say "all connections and the soundcard have been checked and reset," does that include checking that the soundcard is properly seated in its slot?

Yes, I removed the soundcard and plugged it back into the slot.

See, I could order a Creative 5.1 soundcard dirt cheap, but the Audigy SoundBlaster Platinum I have has the front-of-the-tower panel (the size of a cd-rom panel) with jacks for my headphones. The bad news is this card is no longer available. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

Try using the mobo's onboard sound or a generic sound card or something. That'll tell you if it's a hardware problem or a software glitch.

if reinstalling the drivers and/or finding the hidden unmute button don't work then you've probably burned out a soundcard

Something like this happened to me a few months back, it turned out that the PCI slot had died. Try and see if changing the PCI slot will fix your problems.

I was getting kernel panics and all kinds of other nastiness until I finally figured that out.

I take it you tried ye olde reboot already? My X-Fi shares a similar problem at times... the card simply ceases to exist as far as XP is concerned, but a simple boot "fixes" it.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Is this as simple as moving it up one to a vacant slot? Or is there more involved?

Newer versions of my card are now unavailable from the manufacturer. It is similar to <a href="http://www.buy.com/prod/creative-sound-blaster-audigy2-zs-platinum-sound-card/q/loc/101/10354635.html" target="_blank">this card</a>.

Just plug your sound stuff in to the audio jacks on the mobo rather than the Audigy to see if the Audigy's busted.

    To get onboard working:
Enter your BIOS, find the option, turn it on.
    Pretty much BIOS specific.
Involves hammering a certain button at boot (del, F2, etc) should show on screen at boot.
BIOS can be navigated using arrow keys and/or pageup/pagedown keys, changing values is the same.
Said options/instructions should show when inside BIOS.

Moving the card is as simple as said.

Do wish you sound again sir.

I have one wire running from my 5.1 amp to the tower. Moved it to the mobo jacks and still no sound. Moved the soundcard up one slot. I'll go into the BIOS now and see if I can enable it there.

What puzzles me is the headphones work off this "bad" soundcard. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

Didn't see anything in BIOS except OnChip AC97 Controller, which I am clueless about (it was disabled).

Well, I was using the headphones till the sound returned. But this I dont understand - the headphones tap into the soundcard too.

I'm on XP too. It was more of a joke than anything: I doubt the same thing happened to both of us.
