Oh, and it's probably best to ignore the e-drama. It sounds halfway reasonable and the other half an attempt to sour our enthusiasm and fun.

Yeah, best to leave the drama elsewhere.

Wouldnt suprise me.

This is one of the more sloppy mod releases i have seen. Would have expected better from the former RO guy(s).

Still looking foward to the mod, though.

I am too, no doubt about it. The thing that irked me about RO was mostly it's visuals, I really liked the gameplay. If this is a modern RO with improved visuals and animations then I'll be happy.

It's basically Red Orchestra only with Marines and Insurgents instead of Russians and Germans. Take your oversimplifications somewhere else.

You're right, your oversimplification was much better. Shorter and more to the point.

Is there a torrent up for this yet?
• HazeHaze O RLY? Join Date: 2003-07-07 Member: 18018Members, Constellation
I don't know. It's on fileplanet exclusively for somewhere around three hours, so I'm sure they'll be hunting maliciously for torrents. Not that they can do anything in a three hour timespan to take them down, but I doubt anyone is going to throw a torrent up for ... for three hours. They'd probably rather play.

I'm sure there will be a torrent after the exclusive release on fileplanet (sellouts!).

If it has "realistic" (read: counterstrike or worse) movement and/or aiming, not interested.
Otherwise, do tell.

Granted, i haven't played it for very long, and i'm going to give it another chance once i'm more awake.

But if this is "realism" i prefer fun and action when i play.

Its good, but the polish isn't there(knife a wall to hear the entire directory for 'bullets hitting walls'), and there are things that just don't make much sense.

I'm glad this isn't realism the way that one HL1 mod did it- that wasn't realism, that was masochistic idiocy- this one actually allows you to move at a decent pace, shoot from the hip, and the such. Problem is, its like they forgot to code in any locational damage- a shot to my foot, does not kill me, for instance. Etc.

But, the maps are fairly well designed, and the weapons are neat. The initial UI needs a reworking though- I don't like the fact that they dull out the button to actually join a team and squad.

I won't be downloading this mod unless it gets some really positive reviews from people whos opinion I hold in high regard. Watching the trailer almost made me retch. It looks like the same bloody boring crap all over again.

And believe me a shot to the foot would shatter your footbone plate pretty easily, incapacitating you pretty damn good (and until they implement some sort of complex injury-accruement system, a "death" is the best way to convey this concept).

Just got finished playing a few games, and I can safely say that I like it, but it needs some work. The game feels realistic, but it also has a strange pace to it. The movement feels pretty swift until you get into a firefight, where the game slows down to a near standstill pace. The firefights also feel tremendously one sided, with little or no options left up to either side. If you choose to duck behind cover, prepare to lose - if you feel like peeking out again you won't be able to do so quick enough, bring up your iron sights and train them on your target before you yourself are shot and killed. It can be summed up to feel like a sort of sneaking game, where you're always coming up behind someone who doesn't know you're there, or who doesn't get a chance to defend themselves. I haven't found or seen a 'good match' yet, which puts me off. The only time a firefight really shines is when it isn't a one versus one situation, but instead it's a squad situation. Some players can try to move around and flank, while others can use suppressing fire (which works, trust me) to force the enemy's heads down and help your troops move up. The only problem is that there aren't often times when you can flank, and there aren't often times where you can get in a position to deliver suppressing fire, because you're typically squad fighting in an area that's very linear. When your machine gunner pops his head up from cover, he gets shot, because the enemy had their sights trained on his potion, or the flanker's position, or your position. It's just difficult to move.

The weapons feel very solid to use and fire, but they're sadly inaccurate at times. The crosshairs on some weapons are wrong, forcing you to fire 'a little up and to the left' to get a good shot off, from what I can tell, only at certain distances. Although the shroud of uncertainty as to the EXACT path of your bullet is the only negative aspect of the weapons I can pick out. All of the animations look great, and when you fire your weapon the recoil isn't too much or too little, it's just right. When you kill an enemy, it doesn't take four or six bullets as you might be familiar with from CS:S, it takes one or two, and rarely three. A quick burst or single shot takes your opponent down, and because they usually don't know you're there (see above), they're either in a full sprint trying to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible, or they're sitting still and picking off an opponent. When you nail someone running across a street, seeing their legs lock up and the rest of their body falling suit to collapse forward, it's a very, very solid feeling. Or when you nail your opponent in the back and they slump over to the side, it feels perfect. Also, the 'at the hip' firing feels great.

The animations and models are okay. First person weapon animations are very good quality, but third person player animations are shoddy. Theres just something there that feels... off. I can't quite explain it, but the animations are simply strange to watch. They look like they're taking extremely concentrated, quick footed baby steps... I don't know, it's hard to explain, but it's awkward none the less. The player models (and sometimes weapon models) have the same off feeling at times. Their legs feel like they're too skinny, or something, or their feet too small. However the quality of the models is apparent and they're certainly well done. If tweaks and polish were added to the models and animations I think they would be superb.

The maps are extremely well done, well. At least the one I played on. I can't comment too much on all of them, but on the one I have played on it showcases tons of potential for the others. The several nooks and crannies you can plug yourself make the map varied and give you lots of cover to move through.

The atmosphere of the game is my favorite part. Maybe it's because I just started playing, but Insurgency does an amazing job of capturing the feeling of an urban conflict. You'll hear full blown war for a few minutes, but then - if not only for a moment or two - everything will stop and there will be an eerie pause in the noise, only to kick up seconds later and bring you back to the conflict. The movement sounds are very convincing, where you hear your gear jingle and clink as you take your steps, unlike other games were you only hear the ground you're walking on. Although the voice acting is terrible (the insurgents sound like an Arabic version of Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Marines sound like apathetic couch potatoes), the verbal shouting helps immerse you greatly. The fluid weapon movements when you move your mouse, the camera bobbing when you sprint and the sound of yourself panting heavily after running across the street is awesome. Watching your buddy go across the street only to get cut down by a sniper mid stride, seeing his legs lock and his entire body surge into the ground is incredible, and, at times, very... 'powerful.' It feels like a real war when that happens, when that guy you've been communicating with the entire game suddenly gets viciously cut down when he sticks his neck out first instead of you, and you start shouting to the rest of your buddies to get the hell back, to find another way around -- you really get into it.

Overall, I think this game needs some work, but it's defiantly progressing in a positive way, and I think it will be successful in the months to come. Bugs need to be worked out, animations and models polished as well as some assistance to maneuverability, but when it comes down to it it's entertaining and worth your time to check out. If you're a quasi-realism FPS lover then I think you'd be missing out if you didn't at least try it.

This mod seems like this release was very, very rushed.
My thoughts in the first 5 minutes of playing:
- The menu music appears to have been copied from Hans Zimmer's score for King Arthur. Bad start. The background art is cool though.
- The key binding menu has been cleaned up and there are no unnecessary options. I like that.
- I alt-tabbed to complain about the music to Max and the game crashed.
- The loading screen is customized with a map layout. Cool.
- I joined a team and some strange menu came up (I think its a menu) with what looked like some weird squad names or player names. I think I selected one, but I'm just specating. I try again and finally it lets me spawn. If there is a squad system, I have NO idea how it works. This game really needs to be more intuitive.
- Again, I have no idea what's going on. What are my objectives? I should have payed more attention to the loading screen. I guess I'll just run around shooting people. It's what I do best.
- There is nothing saying who killed who. Annoying. Is this supposed to force me to play as a team? I don't have any incentive to play as a team as far as I can tell. But now I don't have any incentive to play as a rambo either. This is like Dystopia all over again.
- The gun I have (m16?) feels good. Seems to be a one-shot kill, I like it. I've just killed a ton of guys by running around buildings. They seem to think that no one is going to go rambo and shoot them in the back while they're camping in a building. Why? I see people proning everywhere, taking cover. It doesn't seem to be neccessary to me.
- "FREE AIM" is a gimmick, and it's very annoying. Was this system designed for console first person shooters because they don't have a mouse? It works well there, but not here.
- I don't mind the lack of crosshair. I don't even notice it (too much Goldeneye?). I like the iron sight thing too.
- The map is really pretty. The HDR effect is great with this sunset.
- I got shot. I'm bored. /quit

I have no patience for games that are not intuitively designed. If at any point I do not know what I should be doing, I will feel compelled to quit. This happened in Dystopia, and it happened again here. I just can't be bothered looking for information that should be presented to me clearly and concisely. BF2 is a fine example of this done right. And even then, if you don't know what to do, you can have a blast doing whatever you feel like.

You pinned most of it down. I think the mod will be fine when it gets refined. The lack of a map bothers me, but I didn't comment on that since we had a commander who gave us waypoints everywhere.

edit: Yes, very rushed release.

edit: I do like free aim, though, how come you don't? It makes shooting from the hip more challenging.

I just don't see the need for free aim. I think there's going to be a big divide on this issue, because it might just be a personal preference. For me, it just feels sluggish. I guess that's a "challenge" but it's not a challenge that provides any rewards. In my case, it only provides frustration. Maybe there should be an option to turn it off?

Oh yeah, and one other thing. The weapon fast switch doesn't work. I could go on about the HUD as well...
