The $70 million pic is essentially being fast-tracked to replace the Paul Verhoeven project The Winter Queen. The latter is being pushed back until at least next spring because leading lady Milla Jovovich is pregnant.

Could be good. I hope.

And that makes me sad.
(I WANT AN AWESOME CYBERPUNK MOVIE!)
Okay, maybe more if you count the lesbian stuff.
But for the most part, I found Neuromancer to be genuinely disturbing, rather than cool.
Now, Snow Crash would make a great movie...
Neuromancer only had like, one cool moment (when the blind bodyguard and the street samurai go at it).

See, that is the problem.
They are probably gona try and turn it into an action flick, something it honestly isn't.

Actually, I was way more into the cyberspace stuff. And I think that the whole Dixie Flatline was a really cool idea.
But then again I'm the guy who doesn't see the point in playing a Heavy in Dystopia.

No Neal Stephenson book would make a good movie. He has enough trouble finishing books, much less a film. They're good to read, but they always seem to lack polish at the end.
I read the ebook, it's like Ghost in the Shell and the Matrix (I believe those are based on Neuromancer).

ALL cyberpunk is based on Neuromancer.
Gibson is considered the father of Cyberpunk.
Street Samurai, The Matrix, ICE, Black ICE, Megacorps, etc etc etc.
He is the source of ALOT of these things, and Neuromancer is the start of it all.
TBH, I am not so sure that Neuromancer is the right book to adapt. Heck, I don't even know if any Gibson would make a adaptation, as he has far to much internal monologue, and that tends to not transfer that well to screen. However, if I was to pick one I would probably go with something like Virtual Light or Count Zero simply b/c they have the prerequisite action that Hollywood would probably try and fit into the other books (like Neuromancer).
We will see.
This is good, this is great. I've always known I have to read this book, but I have never made sufficient effort to get my hands on a copy. Now I know that I'll have to read it before I can see the movie, so that should motivate me.

No no, you're going about it all wrong. Watch the movie first, then read the book to get all the details you missed in the movie. If you read the book first you'll be too busy being mad at the movie for not including X Y and Z to enjoy what they do show. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
This really needs to be made properly. I totally share your concerns Thansal.

As do I.
I also agree Neuromancer isn't the right one to choose for film. Snow Crash would make a great action flick (agree about the ending being meh), but Count Zero, now that would totally own and it wouldn't need to have Neuromancer to set it up. It'd work perfectly as an 'Episode IV' in that respect.
Diamond Age could also be good but there's almost too much going on there, so it'd have to be pure CG or anime I reckon.

I am 100% with you on this.
The movie is gona slaughter the book. So watch the movie, enjoy it for the mindless action flic it is gona be. Then go read the book and go "OMG, THIS IS SO MUCH MORE AWSOMESAUCE!"
I will be going into that movie expecting NOTHING to do with the book (Like Starship Troopers)

Johnny Mnemonic anyone?

It's also sort of based on Simulacron-3.
