Try to find the Vista drivers for your touchpad.

Yea look on the name brand website and get some firmware or drivers for it, that should make it work correctly.

i have an hp zv6000, which according to hp is "not vista capable" so they arent going to offer any drivers for it.

i did find out that it uses a synaptics touchpad, so i got the latest synaptics driver for it, but it still doesnt work. all that allowed me to do was change different settings on the touchpad.

Did you check your mouse settings?

yep, i can assign the left and right mouse buttons to various functions but cant do anything that concerns pressing both at the same time.

I wonder what kind of reasons a school would have for enforcing Vista.

It sounds totally like a driver issue. You were probably using the vendor's drivers in XP, but in Vista you're probably using a generic Microsoft driver.

thats what im thinking about the drivers.

and for the reasons i have to use vista, my laptop came with xp home on it, and i could do what i needed to do with that. had to do with installing certain things i didnt have the rights too unless i had xp pro or vista. i had already gotten a copy of xp pro and vista business off of microsoft msdn academic alliance, which if you dont know what it is, its pretty awesome. if youre school is a part of it you can go and download any of the software your school has the rights too.

ive already used my copy of xp pro on my other computer so that left vista for my laptop.

and i guess ill just have to cope with this minor inconvenience and maybe wait until it solves itself.

yeah, sounds like you're going to have to hold out for the drivers. you might want to send some emails to the vendor if possible.
