Non-Steam NS Over LAN

<div class="IPBDescription">I've got some problems...</div>Hey All,

I'm a big fan of NS and I'm looking forward to NS2. However, once or twice a year some old friends of mine get together to play oldschool HL1 games (among other things) over a LAN. Now, the problem is that, because a few of the people can't or won't run Steam, we have to play everything off of the (older) non-Steam version of Half-Life. That said, we used to be able to run NS fine but now we can't seem to get the proper version installed. So what is the latest version of NS to not require Steam? I've searched through a lot of info and the pinned topics on this site but I can't seem to get a straight answer.

The problem is that it usually activates fine on all of our computers and a person can usually create a game fine but people can't seem to connect without timing out or freezing themselves or the creator (using version 3).

Any ideas? We all have our own original CD keys but only a few of us have Steam installed and we usually just share a "C:\Program Files\Sierra\Half-Life" directory so that we don't have to each install the game & mods and can just copy everything & change our respective keys. One of the FAQ-type postings here made me think that that might be the problem but I'm still not sure; version 1 of NS works fine and seems to point the finger at version 3. There isn't a version 2 is there? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

Anyway, thanks for any and all help.
