thats a dilemma alright ! no ns makes zigzags crazy
don't ask me which one, but this might point you in the right direcitons - there should be a *.cfg file which you can edit for the resolution, or atleast a command line option to put into your shortcut (make a shortcut from steam by rightclicking ns and selecting make shortcut) then edit the shortcut and place in the command line option for a normal 4:3 screen resolution - if there is one that is. don't see why not - that should atleast get you back to where you started.
As for widescreen though - i have always been able to player NS in wide screen since 3.2 anyway, i just set it to 16:10 in the vid options and then select 1680x1050 and its all good <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
there might be a setting in your windows display properties / video card driver properties you might have to play with.
but if you are getting a black screen to me it sounds like you pumped your refresh rate (or even possibly resolution)to high in the vid settings of ns.
Make sure when you set it to wide screen that you give it a resolution your monitor supports (check the manual to see what it does).
If you are having problems changing the resolution then you should be able to edit it in config.cfg I think.
