yes, it is at the heart of sony's problem. However, that /might/ change /if/ HD is adopted en mass. All of the main cable company players are betting on the adoption of HD. Across Europe, North America and Japan the main innovations going on now in tv broadcasting are in SDV and HD and the test markets have been positive in terms of degree of penetration. I think Sony are suffering right now but could potentially be in a much stronger position in the future. We are already seeing limitations on 360 titles due to lack of space on a dual layer dvd, read up on the COD4 situation to see how it is playing out. In the long run, Sony are going to have a base install capable of next gen content, whereas Microsoft will have a splintered market where game developers will have to decide whether to develop within ~7GB for the entire install base, or go to 30GB and sell to a fraction of the install base.
Right now MS are dominating next gen titles, but Sony has the potential to clean up. It all depends on when the critical mass will be reached for the 360. Right now, nothing is cast in stone, and everything could swing to Sony in the next 18 months. If I were a betting man, I'd probably be slightly in favour of the PS3 winning out, but that is predicated on HD being a major factor for the market.
edit: BTW, for all of the stats that show 360 vs SONY as a done deal, note that the PS3 is tracking the historical sales of the 360 fairly well. The PS3 has about as many consoles sold as the 360 had when it was the same age. The main spike of 360 sales, where the install base almost doubled, happened in the run up to it's second christmas season. Sony are facing into their second Christmas season ( first in the EU ) this year, and with some very hot titles on their list, things could also change dramatically there. So, if you feel that price has been a major negative pressure on PS3 sales, you need to account for how the 360 didn't really sell much more at 60% of the price.
Luckily enough I haven't had my xbox 360 break down yet. Having said that, the console is annoyingly loud, like having a jet engine in your room, which makes it pretty useless for media related uses like as a media extender or a dvd player.
To be honest I'm more pissed off at how half the multiplayer games available for it are online only. Let us use our hd tvs and multiple controllers for the love of god.

can any one explain to me why it is always referred to as the ring of death/red ring of death/3 (red) rings of death?
THERE IS NO FARKEN RING!
*insert easy jokes about the owners of 360s*
on that note, I would love a 360, there are a good number of games out for it, however it is out of my price range, and I really don't like the idea of having to pay extra for live.

Yeah, the live charge is really awful. What makes it even worse is these silly Microsoft points. I'd rather pay for what I want, when I want it, and not have dead money sitting in an account doing nothing for me, but plenty for Microsoft.
The 'red ring of death' is badly named because of the ring of lights around the power supply used to signal status codes. 3 red segments in the ring are an indicator of the failure. 4 red segments mean there is no detected video output and apparently MS got their fair share of those returned too.

The points thing is pretty lame, and you hardly get your money's worth. What's worse is all three consoles use something like the MS Point system, right? The Wii has Wii Points and doesn't the PS3 have some sort of "Sony Wallet" system?

You can preload cash onto your account on PSN, but you can basically buy stuff on the fly with cash without converting to simolians and back. At least, that's what I've read.

Completely off topic, but I just wanted to mention that "en masse" is spelled using French spelling rules, with an extra "e" tacked on the end there. Its not a native-english phrase. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" />
A bit of positive news, although I have to wait for them to ship me another box to return my 360, they've hinted at compensation for my wait such as a free game or other item. We'll see if I get something worthwhile, or Shrek The Game...

My brother got 1 month, yes, 1 frkn month gold membership for his 2 months without a console because the first 4 weeks he was without his console it wasn't under warranty. So, when he phoned them up today to report his 3rd system failure they offered to send him out a free game. Of the 5 gamed they offered him, he already owns 4 of them, so he's stuck with some dumb game he doesn't even want.
Anyway, he bought himself a PS3 at the weekend and says he'll get rid of the 360 once he has played halo3 and mass effect.

definitely a nifty site.
is it true that only 15M SNESes were ever sold, while about 110M PS2s were sold? More DSes were sold in the 2 months after launch than there were SNESes in its entire run...
I guess gaming took off more than I knew since my youth.

Incidentally, I had to knock off work early yesterday to buy a replacement tent and while I was in town I took the time to check out the recent PS3 deals. All but one of the 4 main stores were completely sold out of PS3s, and one shop said that since the new deal, they've been selling like hot cakes.
I find it interesting that despite the alleged overpricing and lack of games, that the PS3 is tracking the 360 very well. I presume Sony are banking on a surge in PS3 spending this Christmas, what with their excellent lineup of games. If they can push another 3-4 million consoles over the holiday and sales seasons ( basically from now through to feb '08 ) they'll be very well positioned.

At Future Shop we've had two PS3's come back this week, selling them for $55 off as open box deals, and we're lucky to sell one every few days.
