I'd like to ask the community to come up with an agreed upon a poster which allows us to plaster your local city with NS advertisement. I personally have no talent for art, so I’m looking for anyone that does have something going for them. This is a great oppertunity to get your name out there, i plan on displaying at least 300. A few rules:

* Posters must be 1 foot by 10 inch (Seattle size limitation), AND 8" x 11" If you have to choose, go with average paper please.

* Posters should feature your own art, give UWE credit where it's due.

* Posters must have UWE website URL on the poster, above 15 font.

* Sign your name (or just write it out) on the bottom right hand.

* Poster must say "Natural selection II" and leave room for a catch phrase the community will vote on later.

* If you poster is deemed as copyright i may ask for it to be taken down or I’ll place the reference for you. You have been warned on this one I will modify your work to keep UWE from being sued.

I personally think gritty is better, but that's just me. Also try to stay away from NS1 art if you can, though you don't have to. I will be posting signs around Seattle, probably Pike Place and Capital Hill. If you don't want me to place your art around the city, don't post here.

Also, for the less talented in the visual arts - we need a slogan / catch phrase. Go nuts, if it sounds cool and stupid... or stupid cool just post it. I'll count up saying that has the most votes and ask for the artists to please include them in their poster. I'll edit the post every time someone comes up with a new phrase.

You may now kick much ass.

*Edit*
short story concept a possibility.

<i>"Are you doing you're part? The TSA need you!"</i>

Good but i have a feeling that NS2 will have its own marketing team either through steam or their lovely sponsors. but you never know.
We should come up with something now, but I think i'd be a good idea to leave the posting of thy holy posters until about a month or so before release for the most impact.

Otherwise people won't know wtf we are talking about, and most likely forget by the time NS2 is ready.

what about like ns1 "insider jokes" obviously they would need relevant illustrations to get the point across.

<i>"TSA Light Machine Gun, 40 bullets in 5 seconds, unusable scope"

"9 out of 10 experts recommend ladders to trap fades"

"Scorpions that Hovar?, not on my space ship"

"Don't you wish you could eject your boss?"

"Evoling into a Gorge, 10 res, wall of lame, 60 res, loosing the game because the onos can't fit past your WoL, priceless"</i>
  • GaidanGaidan Join Date: 2006-10-31 Member: 58132Members
As much as i love the wall of lame, iI'm ganna say the point of this is to get as much information out as quickly as possible. No inside jokes unless someone else wants to post them.

the eject your boss one is amazing.
  • halonhalon Join Date: 2007-08-04 Member: 61781Members
I've gotta say, "Ever wish you could eject your boss" is so good. Probably won't mean much to the audience of the poster though, but do give it some thought <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I'm thinking of something like this:

    <some rediculous statement>
    Yeah, right.

    For example:
A skulk is just an overgrown ant.
    ...
    Yeah, right.

    or

We aren't being watched by aliens.
    Yeah, right.

    ...or...

    <following spoken like a true marine <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />>
There ain't no place I'd rather be!
    Yeah, right.

    Here's a good insider joke:
Forget about the bridge, let's set up base in the cargo hold!
  • GaidanGaidan Join Date: 2006-10-31 Member: 58132Members
Each of those would require a distinct picture for the audiance to understand, if someone creates something of that nature they will be considered.
  • halonhalon Join Date: 2007-08-04 Member: 61781Members
Quite right. I guess I'm a little art-impaired so I can't really picture anything along those lines... yet.

I'm pretty sure there are many arty types around. Come on guys!

TBH some of these suggestions would work so much better as youtube ads. Some light comedy of "wouldn't you like to eject your boss" acted out in real world followed by some comparable ingame footage. Or "Didn't your mother tell you it's dirty to spit" followed by some ingame gorge footage. "Does your family drive you up the wall?", again, comedy footage followed by some cool skulk running footage.

For posters though you have to think what it is you're trying to achieve. Are you attempting to go viral here or instead actually pull people in with more direct marketing?

I would say that since we have no in game screen shots to use or even that much concept art (and that UWE will probably have proper ads going around) that we should make them as minimal as possible, so people just wonder what it is and check out the web page. I don't know if <a href="http://www.ask.com" target="_blank">Ask.com</a> did this anywhere else, but here in the UK they did an ad campaign where they just put the red circle of their logo with phrases like "the internet revolution is coming" (I think it was something like that...) or "the internet shouldn't be controlled by one company", referring to Google I guess. The posters had images that suggested some kind of revolution, fists, mega phones what have you. The whole campaign was then toped off with a series of television ads that looked like dodgy home made videos from some kind of cult and then the same red circle; this eventually was toped off with the adverts that had Ask.com at the end of them.

So what I suggest is just putting some kind of logo maybe the TSA one and then a simple slogan. I’ll knock some up as soon as I get Photoshop installed on this PC again. If only the Kharaa had a logo, I suppose you could just use the outline of the hive. You could also make out that the war was in that city; by placing the posters over one another. And have posters with slogans like: “what side will you join?” and “The TSA needs you” or just the “the TSA needs you” with a claw mark all the way through it.

Another idea might be a short story and then the website. Like Jack Daniels do, but instead of talking about how your drink was made do something like

“THEY ARE ALL AROUND ME! SURROUNDED! I CAN HEAR THEM! BUT WE NEVER SAW THEM! NEVER SAW THEM UNTIL... IT WAS TOO LATE! TOO LATE! THE REST ARE DEAD! THE REST WERE DEAD! THEY ARE ALL DEAD! HOW WAS I TO SURVIVE? ALONE?! I NEVER SIGNED UP FOR THIS! I WASN’T WARNED ABOUT THIS! THEY NEVER TOLD ME ABOUT IT! NO ONE TOLD ME! I’M NEXT! I KNOW IT...”

Just that on a black background. And then smaller letters on the bottom put “the story continues here: **web page**”

Something like that, play with words, fonts and simple images, not much point at this stage to do anything more than that. Don’t give the game away and make people want to know more. The less you tell them the more they want to know, but you have to do this kind of advertising really well and really in peoples faces, with bold statements that just make people remember it till they get to a computer.

As I said I’ll install Photoshop ASAP and put some on here.

Ideas are great, but i'm looking for something to actually advertise with - so if you post your ideas rather than talk about them I could work with the concept Inked.

Just so you are aware, posters are usually refered to as part of a guerrilla advertising campaign, rather than a viral advertising campaign.

Guerrilla, hit them where they least expect it and disappear into the night, making use of locals without alot of training or cost. (Example: Fans handing out flyers to their favourite concert for just a ticket to the show or even for nothing at all in payment for the services)

Viral, often meant for short attention spans, an idea that gets stuck in their head, and spreads fast over a vast audience. (Example: The "jingle" tv commercials, where their tune gets stuck in your head)

Though, considering the use of the internet as a means of spreading the idea of the posters, this is probably both viral and guerrilla.

May I suggest a size for the posters that is printed off on peoples' and offices' basic printers, like 8" x 11", as well as in black and white & color versions of the posters. This way nearly anyone with the minimal resources can print off a few and place them around their towns.

Heck I already have done guerrilla marketing for NS, even a bit at work. (I need a longer trailer video and in HD please) And remember my NS pumpkin making tradition I do every Halloween (NS's "birthday")?

"You're going to need more than Chaps for this Frontier" with a picture of the marine, or
"And you thought lassoing a bull was tough" with a picture of the Onos.

Thank you Inked. My honest opinion, two things come to mind, 1) if I were to mass produce these to staple on boards and telephone polls or whatever, the amount of ink my printer would go through would be prohibitive, and 2) Spelling of continues is wrong at the end of the first poster.

2nd thing is easily corrected, and the first is harder. The first means making a poster that has white (or whatever the color of the paper) as the main thing, the words and pictures all work around that. Then any of us, pretty much anywhere in the world could mass produce these on basic 8" by 11" paper - I imagine posters work best when you see them everywhere and people can't help but see them and go "What is that?" I've seen it work with stickers that surf shop gave out before, its meant to draw traffic to the site, yes?

    Other than that, I think the wording and the imagery are excellent. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

Yeah I didn’t notice that silly little typo. Changed it now on the post above.

Well I’ll leave those last 2 posters up just in case anyone wants to print them off...

I changed the second one to these 2:

    <a href="http://img390.imageshack.us/my.php?image=somewhereoutthere2rt4.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img390.imageshack.us/img390/3460/somewhereoutthere2rt4.th.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

    <a href="http://img365.imageshack.us/my.php?image=somewhereoutthere3jk9.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/6659/somewhereoutthere3jk9.th.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

I think they work quite well. But I’ll do some proper ones later.

Is 8" by 11" A4?<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" /> Cause those ones I have done so far are all A4. This means you should also be able to print off 2 onto one sheet of A4 if you really want a make a lot more per paper used.

EDIT: Heres another one. Works quite well in B+W too, just set your printer to B+W or what ever. Think it might be too wordy tho!

This works very, very well. Once the image is saved, it can be made to fit nearly 4 to a piece of 8"x11" or allow the print to fit to size for 1 to a 8"x11", just be sure to turn off crop to match when you print, or you lose some of the image, the website info at the bottom or the top of the image.

I ran a test poster and this is great! Get this, as I went to print it she goes "Hey, how much of my ink is this going to use?" Hehe... Thanks Inked, IMHO, I think this should get you mad kudos and also be made a part of the press kit. We should move this image up to the first post somehow, or even start a new thread if we have to, get it stickied, and then ask people to start plastering their locales with it at the appropriate time.

Appropriate time to me to avoid Over Hype, would be when we have a hard release date that can not be moved, also given some sort of video of the gameplay of NS2 in action, something that will sink the hooks in a potential customer. Right now would be inappropriate because this stage appeals pretty much only to gamers who have an interest in knowing something of the nitty gritty of game development.

I really like your posters, especially the last 3.

Since we're on the topic of spelling mistakes, the grammar in your sig is a bit off.

It should be "nature is" or "nature's" and not "natures".

Hope you like it I would make a Photoshop of it but I dont have time... This is an idea I am putting forward.

We don't have any images of these things, so this idea wont be made until we do...

...I haven't claimed any credit for any of the ideas I have done so far, I saw all the ideas that have been put up here (including my own) as being thrown into the cooking pot. If people want to make them they can, but they should post them up here when they do, so we can all have our say what we think, and any changes that need doing. Also, who is going to sign their poster? No one should be claiming any credit for the posters, it should be a group effort.

...Can people give me some ideas for things we can do. I was thinking along the likes of “Join the TSA” war posters, done in a way that looks like you might find it on Earth in the same time period that NS2 is set in. I had a look at old war posters on Google, but none of them have been very inspiring. If anyone can find any real adverts for joining the army, that they think can be adapted to look like a ‘futuristic’ “Join the TSA” war poster then that would be extremely helpful. Or even any good fonts that you think would work as a TSA font, I don’t think the NS2 font works that well as the TSAs font; or even looks like its been printed.
