I have finished my hardcore school season and decided to start playing games again. I now own a new desktop [going from a 14" Gateway laptop to a 19" ViewSonic desktop monitor. Yay!] and I would like to start playing NS again. Before I install the game, I have these two questions:
1. When following the install directions on the main page [www.naturalselection.com], I always ended up with a double install. This means I own the HL1 CD from a long time ago. I install the game using the CD. Then next I download and install Steam. When Steam "sees" my games, it detects HL1 just fine and I can play it SP or Multiplayer also just fine; however, it installs HL1 again. [yes, it actually downloads HL1 again and installs it in a different sub directory!] Why it does this I don't know, but it does. This will be the third time I do a reinstall and I didn't want more space taken AGAIN from this, as it also causes problems with knowing where to install mods and sound packs and stuff. So, does anyone who works for these people have a second page for people who decide NOT to repurchase the game every time through Steam, and just want to install it from the CD? It's great for people who have never done it before, but for those of us who must reinstall it for whatever reason, and own the HL1 CD the naturalselection install directions page is useless. Please help anyone if you can. I only want one install of HL1....
2. The last time I was playing NS, I used Steam of course and noticed my Steam directory getting bigger and bigger. I mean, all I have installed is HL1, and NS. It started out at I think 1.5 gigs, which is cool, but over the course of about 6 months it grew to around 5-6 gigs, which is not cool! The file size was correct [not just wnidows tellin me it was], because my third party defrag software and virus scanning software both gave me the same folder size for Steam, but when using right click>properties in Windows XP, only 1.5 gb's showed up! I never downloaded anything other then the NS updated which I think were like 40 megs or somn? So how does this directory grow to a mysterious 5-6 gigs? My only thought is to find some sort of directory mapping software that ignores XP's hidden folder properties and REALLY tells me what is there somehow, so if Steam is installing some sort of crap in my system, I will know about it. Any ideas? Anyone?
