1. perhaps you spawn at a random hive location, and within the first minute the hive can be 'picked up' be a player who then transforms into the gorganaut.
2. if you have the hive choosable, people will very soon discover the optimal hive to start from (often middle) and always choose that one. would be rather stale.

well, I'm not against the random location of hives out of 6-10 locations depending on map size. But then the ping of death comes into play. Hives are the primary building for aliens to spawn from, how can they survive when walking about trying to decide where to put the hive.
I think increasing the number of location the hive could be is a better solution, when keeping the alien's lifesupport and backstory intact (perhaps with voting system). I however like the none-player influenced idea of starting location better, just increase the possible locations of the hive.
On another note, marines usually enter in one certain location, because it's an easily accessable area with a dock or airlock or other type of entrance. Maybe if a ship map for example, has more possible access areas from the outside they could have a random location thing going. But still there are maps out there without an explaination on how the heck the marines got there in the first place. Phasing into an infested base/ship would be a big nono, for all you know you could be phasing into an infested area. Not the most hospitible area to setup a primary base <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
