But how will he view all of them? his resolution is too low to see that and those pesky properties windows...

    -_-

Look at the free space on the harddrive vs it's full size... then see how much space all 4 folders take up... (those 4 folders have every file on the drive inside of them).

something about how the total size of those 4 folders doesn't add up to the amount of disk space filled on the HD?

1 internet to you, good sir!

So what I want to know is, where did those 12 gb go? Has anybody heard of vista being ###### like this? I sorta of want them back...

Also, I already checked to bad sectors and defragmented...

hmm... maybe vista's so idiot-proof that it has system files that are hidden even when you're showing system files? or maybe hidden recovery data? just speculating...

Bwahaha, this is actually a feature a friend of mine at work said was "the best feature vista has, period, and its like no one knows about it". Or at least I think it is.

Supposedly, there is a setting you can turn on/off at will, that turns part of your hard drive into a RAM cache, and gets treated just like it. Its variable on size and supposedly is the reason Vista doesn't require the huge amounts of RAM people were claiming early on.

Thats where I'm guessing they went.

The root directory should contain some big files. One is pagefile.sys, the pagefile, and the other is hiberfil.sys, used to store the RAM state if the computer hibernates. They won't quite cover twelve gigabytes, though.

Right, so I made it so I can view system files (forgot this isn't included with hidden files) and after emptying my recycle bin (shutupshutupshutup I forgot it counts) Im now just missing a grand total of 7.2 gb, ugh.

Alright, I think I got it. System restore was using up the last amount. Hah, now I have more space for por- I mean, educational documents.

are you just counting what's in the folders or items in the root directory as well?
