Single Player Stats Revisited

<div class="IPBDescription">In A Multiplayer Game (TF2 Style)</div>Okay, that last thread got messed up with an assumption, so I hope this doesn't happen to this one.

So, I have a little story to tell, now everyone gather round real close and listen to this tale of woe and wicked cool gaming...

I finally buckle, give in, throw in the towel, and buy some games off of Steam. I buy the Orange Box, and it is a surprisingly cool experience (especially since the CDN dollar is pretty close to an American one these days), everything goes off without a hitch.

While I wait for TF2 to finish downloading, I play Peggle Extreme. This game is quick gaming goodness at its best. *PING* Oh, its done. Well, lets see what is up with this TF2 thing...

OMG, I suck. I mean I die all the time and get no points. I couldn't be more of a n00b if I tried. But wait a second, every time I die, instead of feeling like a piece of crap, I get this message:

<b>"On the bright side, you stayed alive the for 30 seconds with that [insert class character], your longest yet!"</b>

And each time I died, it would let me know some stats that told me something good I had done that time.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

I may have had the lowest scores, but I was having a blast! Everytime I spawned was just another chance to improve my own personal stats, to always be told what a good job I was doing. I felt like a lil kid proud of my first crap because my parents are all "Good job!"

And it wasn't just stats on staying alive or killing either, it was stats on assists, healing, building, and much more!

So, I tried out each class once, and now, when map is loading, it tells me which one I played the most, and which one has scored the most points! I know I am best at medic and engineer and sniper! Though, a noobish best, it is still my best!

Plus, get this, I get awards too! There is a part to TF2 where I get badges, ribbons, and titles for doing stuff!

*gaming-geek-gasm* <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

Please, oh please, could Natural Selection 2 beg, borrow, or steal this and make it our own? This alone has helped me not instantly toss in the towel in frustration at having such wonderful basic stats as 0 score 25 deaths.

Discuss! Debate! Pro and Con! ... please

I like the overall idea. But needs to be a toggle item, or left as a server-side plugin.

anyone who has played bf2/2142 will know how important badges and points and stats are for the ones who play those games. its bragging rights, but it really hits something in our psychopathic human hearts <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

it would have been fun if NS2 had them, not really necessary, but if it is added, it will add both good and bad things to the game. you will get people exploiting the game for points, but you will also get more serious players as their stats will show if they are trolls or skilled.

I would also like to know of anyone who responds to this thread if you have in fact played Team Fortress 2 and what you thought of the use of single player stats in that game.

I believe if you have played TF2, you will see just how much of a positive nature the stats can have on playing with others as a team.

You will then seriously reconsider this being "toggled" which would be a big mistake IMHO. It really is that much of a improvement.

I really do like the way they have implemented stats in TF2. I wouldn't mind seeing them in NS2 though I would prefer them to focus on the game first.

Personal stats are fine, the the ones if TF2 are SO GAWD AWFULLY HUGE on the screen. I dont wanna see my stats every time I die, or every time I spawn. I dont wanna know this is the 8347923 bullet I've shot while I'm shooting it. Please, if there are stats, make no note of them in the actual game, and leave them on a separate menu.

I'm not doubting that certain individuals might find this sort of thing appealing and interesting, but keep in mind that not everyone has a positive attitude. I've one player in mind that was actually a team leader, and had such a bad attitude that whenever he died, he blamed everything on others and was constantly yelling at them in a drill-sargent manner. Seeing that this time he stayed alive longer or not as long as the time before might actually not be beneficial for the likes of him and drive him into a frenzy.

Yes it might boost your confidence and make you want to play, but might also have the opposite effect. I know that I personally wouldn't like that kind of stats... I left CS because it was too stats oriented, and they (UWE) managed to bring CS into NS with combat mode... don't go adding stats on top of it. Awards, ok... I can live with that, but it's a good thing that they only come once per game...

It all depends on how you create this; I do like the overall effect of personal stats. I emphasise <b>personal</b>.
When you have stats comparing players with eachother; there will always be elitism, rambo's so on and so forth. However, I do think that personal stats, which allow you to "beat" things <b>you</b> alone achieve have a great potential of giving a positive twist to the game. From what I've read so far some agree and some don't; here's a little list of what I think <b>would</b> work in this case:
    - An option, stat display on or off.
    - When off, the stats are showed in a seperate menu, not in the game itself.
    - This menu can be accessed on demand, through a hotkey for instance.
    - When on, the stats are showed ingame, but not dominantly; the menu still works.

If someone doesn't want these stats, one could just turn them off; where others who do enjoy it can use this. Yes, this post is somewhat of a summary.

There is already a plugin on a couple servers that provide this. They are not all YOUR stats, but they show stats for everyone, like who welded the most, who took most damage, I usually get the "most structures built" one, plus it gives me the numbers. This could probably be updated to work with NS2 and include everything you want like hit %, longest life time, etc etc

The stats I have seen so far are global as described above. Such as who was eaten the most, used the most gas as a lerk, pistol kills, etc. These are so general in an of themselves that it's just a fun fact after the game. I have seen BF2 stats online but not played and I think those for that game setup are good. I have not played TF2 yet, didn't even know it was out but I think those stats sound good for that style and the encouragement is a really good idea for new players who are likely to be slaughtered. I think NS is likely to see some stat ######s like all games but the key is what stats are tracked. Now K/D is out because your going to die, you just are, get over it. However accuracy, wielding, should there be some medic setup doing that, healing for gorges. Anything that can be tracked that helped the team, now that is worthy. I think badges would be intersting but you need either round badges or something that setup so people don't have an endless supply of the same badge. Something you can work for or the commander hands out at the end of the round might have merit.

There's a lot you can do with stats and depending on the game and the setup is what should dictate what is displayed and how is my opinion. If you want this online and global I think that is the way to go to.

Well, heres a basic shot from a server [raptor?], they offer stats at the end of a game. Maybe someone could simply extend it to give you all your personal stats.

    Thats really cool , i like it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />.

But on a competive note showing K:D Ratio is a nice thing and hit ratio (Accuracy) , it makes you play harder to better yourself and to perform properly. But doesnt always matter in NS because your playing different roles so to speak, so maybe like for a commander a personal stat and or win/lose ratio aswell as counter would be nice to have, something tied with steam. Also effieciency could be tracked aswell for personal review to try to get better.

The only thing with those end game stats is they're still a leader board for all players (with some disparaging award in there too).

The beauty of the TF2 system is positive reinforcement to continue playing the game, it's all personal, no-one else see's your stats in game other than your score (and in NS2 it'd be kills and deaths too I'd assume), but you get a chance to work out how you're playing compared to yourself.

Exactly. I'm glad someone else gets it too. Positive reinforcement, it really does help make the game that much more fun!
