Windows Vista Ultimate is a piece of...

BlooBloo Village Fool of UWF Join Date: 2006-11-09 Member: 58497Members
I've been using Vista for almost two weeks now and it sucks and i hate it!

All my old usb stuff like my photoprinter has no drivers, i already had one bluescreen, the display keeps resetting itself, i can't play Red Alert 2, i cant install peerguardian so the government is all over my PC, looking for stuff they can charge me with. And wost of all:

I CAN'T DELETE MY OWN STUFF!

This is the most demonic piece of malware i have ever been forced to use. Not even iTunes and Realplayer is demonic enough to even stand besides this demonic overlord.
I used to believe in microsoft like i believed in santa and God. Now i don't believe in anything anymore. The operating system takes a massive 15 gig of my roaring Western Digital Raptor which consists of 74 GB. I don't even have room for my games because of that... abomination.

Does anyone suffer under the same curse as me?

Does anyone know how to tame this beast of an operating system?

Then please, PLEASE... let me know!

Turn off automatic backup, that will get you your space back(I was missing 12 gigs at one point, but I fixed that).
Make sure you continually upgrade all your drivers as well, new ones get released all the time.

It is annoying, but they released an update at one point, that preserved all data with disabled UAC.

Trust me on this one. I had the problem myself.

Control panel -> System -> System protection tab -> un-check your hard drives.

This completely disables system restore, which I have never used anyway.

Same as here. I had to buy a router because no ADSL USB modems work with vista, but I really should have bought a router ages ago. Vista just gave me that kick up the arse I needed.

Mind you I'm using premium and not ultimate.

I will as soon as my computer works again. Getting a bugcheck error that causes startup to fail and I can't revert to any back ups. It's possible it's a hardware problem as is suggests but the only thing I changed was a microsoft update(definition update I believe) and the boot disk didn't find anything wrong with the HDD, RAM, Mobo or anyhting else when I ran it. Then again I don't know what an unknown bugcheck error is.

Try using disk cleanup to delete your old backups/shadows

dx10 for my vidja gaming is about the only reason I see for an update. I don't own it either so I really can't say what's nice about it. I've just seen irritating things like having to "allow" or "confirm" actions like on install and such. (ala the Mac vs PC ads.)

so I too would like someone to give me the sales pitch.

I have Vista Ultimate, because I got it for free (see the Live Club thread, or whatever it was called), but I don't have anywhere to install it right now (everything I've heard says that my 2-year-old computer with 512 MB RAM won't cut it, and I use that as a server running Gentoo anyway). I wonder if it was worth the time I put into getting it.

The allow/confirm things is just advertising bull######, you can turn it off by clicking a single button.

Honestly, it's no different then XP. It's basically just better looking/ slightly easier to use then XP. For all other purposes, it's pretty much the same OS. I guess there are driver issues(I guess some pieces of hardware from really old companies won't work because they never updated their available drivers), but I haven't run across any.

If you are getting a new computer, I'd get Vista. Most of the things people ###### about can be easily fixed by changing settings around.

edit: im_lost: Yeah because setting up live macro took you so much time! ;p
I live-macroed a zune, and it never shipped. My brother used nuke (20k points in 1 minute) and he got it in the mail just recently. I hate life.

Actually, I hand-typed everything in. I just sped up the process by finding a site that had the answers and copying them over. That way, even if they caught all the people using macros, I didn't use one at all.

If they ran on XP Im pretty sure they will run on Vista. I've been playing HL1 tons and never had a single problem.

    Clearly.

Seriously though, its just one of several examples of performance loss due to bugginess (hopefully it's bugs, and not DRM as the more paranoid claim).

Vista is good at some points, but some features just makes you think:

    “is this really necessary”.

But I believe that the future will bring more updates to vista making it more backwards compatible with older games and making it able to run old programs and hardware. Also Vista looks really good. But looks isn’t everything. It’s the insides that count. Even tough I already suffered my first blue screen. Vista unlike XP claimed it had repaired the problem the next bootup. XP usually gives you that “SYSTEM RECOVERED AFTER FATAL ERROR”. Do you want to look at some advanced error code?”

    So Vista isn’t that bad…

It’s just that some times vista knows exactly what to do if it wants to piss me off. Like being unable to download the Flash player for IM, so that I get this message once every 10 min.

    <img src="http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s254/Mats_photo/BULL######.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

And guess what? It minimizes all fullscreen programs when it pops up.

I’ve tried, but there I no way to disable it except removing IM from the pc.

EDIT: It seems my img tag isn't working since the file uploaded contains the foul word "Bull######.jpg"

I'm currently running Vista 64bit which I initially thought was an incredibly stupid decision. However, after taking a bit of time to tweak Vista settings (e.g. security notifications) its grown on me a lot. I especially like the new windows explorer navigation and the more polished interface. Games on the whole have been completely fine. Same with drivers.

I have to admit the Aero interface is only fun for around 20 seconds tho.. The one <i>major</i> complaint I have at the moment is the fact that Vista and wireless gaming do not go together at all. The old, troublesome Wireless Zero Configuration in XP could easily be switched off. However, it's younger and more stubborn sibling, the WLAN Config service cannot be terminated without losing a wireless connection altogether. So, at the moment, I get lag approx. every 60 seconds while Vista (un)helpfully tries to find new networks for me to join. :<

edit: I should mention that I've had Vista for 2 weeks now and it hasn't crashed a single time...

Thats my problem with vista - I'd never pay like $200 bucks to get a skin and a security button for XP, and they are what seems to be the big difference.

Underneath its a very different beast to XP, but to the user its not so different once you get past the shiny surface. I think it really suffers for too much clutter, too many menus, buttons, popups, toolbars that hide and dissappear etc etc. I have a hard time picturing where my files actually are sometimes lol - mainly because the file structures have changed. like the c:\users thing and the pictures and musc folders have moved to the username folder instead of being in my documents - which does actually make more sense now that i think about it.

Oh actually the best thing about vista I think is the picture viewer - it lets you attach tags to your photos so it makes them much easier to sort - thats if you have time to go through all of your pictures and label each one with, mum, dad, holiday, beach, etc etc. Its not really a problem if you are adding new ones though as its a gradual process.

Perhaps once sp1 comes and Vista is actually faster than XP then its probably worth it. Even then its probably still 12 months before its worth it.

There are still a million little annoying things that though, like you can't drag your taskbar tabs around like you can with IE7 / firefox tabs.

having said all of that WTF has it taken Microsoft 7 years to develop this? I'm no programmer or business manager, but if I had what appears to be unlimited resources I think my operating system SCHKORPIO - OS1 would cr4p all over Vista. For starters I would make the home edition free for home use and gaming, that would actually get people to use it. I think its silly charging for what many people see as a mandatory peice of software (yes linux is free, but its not for us gamers or for the old folk). Its like buying a car and then having to pay for the roads too. Which brings me to my next point. Make it free and charge for addon's like Aero etc. 10$ max.

EDIT - infact I DARE MS TO HIRE ME as their boss so I can lead them to glory - they can even televise it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Well, we could have Windows be free to use, but paid for through tax money. That's how public roads work. Somehow, I don't think "Free Windows! Oh, and we're increasing taxes," would be so monstrously popular.

I would be a bigger fan of vista if it didn't crash so much. It's more temperamental than my last girlfriend. XP so rarely crashed on me until the Mobo started dieing. Now, I am amazed when Vista doesn't crash during a night of playing/surfing. Talk about lowering my standards <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/asrifle.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::asrifle::" border="0" alt="asrifle.gif" />
