New Marine Upgrade

Imp engineering gear...
After reading another post and reading the About page for NS2 I thought it was very one sided in new abilities and whatnot, dynamic infestation etc. So I was thinking what could be done for marines to add to them abit to even the additions. So I was thinking something along the lines of a new unit that a marine could become or something along those lines; A spider-like mechanical engineering droid thats role is to repair, fast-build that could be used for rapid expansion and or as support.

I'm not sure where in the tech-tree something like this could fit in, but perhaps it could be early on as a more fun/fast way to build base initially or late in the tech-tree near jp's and ha. It could possibly act like a command chair so you have your console you login to and control the droid remotely allowing you to use it for different strategies.

Could act like a "Tank unit" can take alot of physical hits but very little in the way of bile or acid-rockets, which would make it quite a useful unit for early expansions so it could go first through doors and check out without putting the players at risk and not letting the aliens gain res from early kills.

Cost of the unit - I think a once off cost would suffice and having the wreck of the unit be able to be brought back to the console for re-use.

So to summarise:

Spider-like mechanical unit

Fast build and repair capabilities

Strengths - against physical biting attacks.

Weakness - against bile and acid attacks.

Doesn't cost addition res to rebuild, only the broken droid.

Doesn't count as a marine death - so doesn't count as res for aliens upon kill.

hmm, i like the theory that there would be mechanical units that doesnt have the same weakness as the marines. give the aliens a harder nut to crack than flesh and bones.

a commander-esque control chair for these machines would probably be the best way to control them. if a robot is taken out, the chair will slowly produce a new one for no cost.
how about the ability to have multiple robots available when upgrading the chair? you wouldnt really be able to control every robot at the same time. But if you had smaller windows showing the view of the inactive robots while in your primary robot, it would work out pretty well. put one robot around a resource point that nobody really wants to protect, go over to another robot and send him somewhere else to do some work. some skulk comes out and attacks the first resource point, you switch into the first robot and takes out the skulk, someone gets over there and repairs the robot.

I like the idea, but maybe instead of having a chair, it would be a simple standup terminal, so it leaves him open to be eaten by aliens who dare to walk into the base. So you get the advantage of controlling a robot, but then the marine controlling it is completely open to attack!

The only part I do not agree with however, is the "Fast build and repair capabilities." Doesn't this take away from the idea that the marines are supposed to get out of the base and build together. I think it sounds cool, but in reality alot of people wouldn't build things then, they would just be like "get the robot to do it", and go do something else [ignoring the team]. It happens enough, but adding something to the game like this would only make it worse. I only worry basically that it will take away from the "team effort" part of the marine side, which is counter to what you want to do, but I do think a robot unit sounds badass! Plus, what then about the welder?

In regards to the Fast build and repair capabilities, i don't mean it to build itself you have to control it to build. So basically com drops the robot cc (robot command center) marine builds it first, jumps in then it goes to first person view from the robots perspective and you can go around the map normally as you would like a marine and build faster than a marine would say perhaps as fast as two marines, and double speed welding, perhaps welding being the only form of offensive weapon so very close range but because it welds twice as fast, twice as much weld damage? I dunno just thoughts.

And as for the welder as a drop-able weapon I don't think it would be redundant at all heavies need them to march effectively and marines still use them. I think this kind of system would just add another level of game-play and possible strategies to NS2 that would lead to an even more dynamic game-play experience.

bump cmon i might be abit biased but yeah I reckon this could be good and the aliens are fairly full and not much has been proposed for marines yet so if you like the idea or have nething to improve it post duit now!

A splendid idea. VERY debatable. This can also be in the way like DEUS EX GAME OF THE YEAR EDITION's robot gaurd bots that walk around and have 2 rail guns and are FIN AWSOME!!! Maybe this idea can be applied to the turrets of ns2. They turn into a moving gun gaurd. AI or even controllable. I have no more time to brain storm so bye!
