Why cant I start natural selection?

The standard way to get it working is to have steam, with a valid license for half-life 1 ( half-life 2 will not do ). Then you need ot run half-life to prepare it for mods. The best thing to do is to play the half-life hazard course (but any map will do ). Then and only then do you install natural selection.

If your HL1 CD Key is already in use you'll need another one.

Or, if you have proof of purchase you could try contacting Valve to prove that you own that CD Key.

I have the same problem that homerliew had. Even when I try to open half life to start the default hazard course It loads up the background and then my cursor disappears and none of the menu links show up. I do have an activated a good standing steam ID. Counter-Strike works tho. I'm gonna try and install team fortress and see if that works.

You don't have the same problem at all.
Your problem is that HL is not loading for what ever reason. I would suggest usign the forums over at steampowered.com
