Every time I see someone use leet speek I come closer to killing myself. It makes me sick to my stomach to see animals delight in their lack of intelligence. These feelings used to manifest themselves as anger, but now I'm just resigned to the fact that we are entering a new Dark Age.

Entering? My friend, we have already arrived. However, I approve of the word Turrent, because it brings back fond memories of Subspace.

Just remember, there's always beacons of light in the deepest darkness. Speaking figuratively of course. But then again I don't know what I'm talking about anymore, not since my head caved in from all the "Mad Skillz".

Hrm I doubt it originated in MMORPG's but hey, you never know. My personal favorite owned variant is poned. Yay. Also, try pronouncing the word pwn or pwned. Is it like pween? I don't know. Poned solves that problem.

JEFF K is TEH 1337.

Don't worry, it's fake. Pretty funny though. Check out his C&C review..

Jeff K is the man. SA is also one of my favorite sites. I delight in the misery of all people, or bodily harm I can't remember which.

It almost feels sad to make this my first post, but please bear with me.

l337 speech (not called 1337, 133+ or elite then) originated from the old hacking days (before the internet "explosion") as a way to escape keywords from being logged (wordlogging is almost gone now due to the aforementioned expansion of the internet). For example, if the words hack and password were used together in a sentence or just a few sentences apart the whole conversation would be logged and be sent for a check-up.
So, clever as these early hackers was, they started to exchange letters for ascii.
Later on script-kiddies saw this, didn't understand what was going on, and adopted it because their "gurus" spoke like that.

And that is why we are plagued with t3h 133+.

actually l33t has been around from about the early 1980s i wrote an artcile about it for my school newspaper, i'll reprint a part of it here,

L33t speak is not a written language and it can’t be spoken. It exists only online and cannot be appreciated without the keyboard. Historically in the early days of the internet(1980s) hackers made websites. But they didn’t want their sites to be found on any search engine by just anyone typing in “hacker”. So they took measures, they began changing vowels into various numbers and letters. Lets take “hacker” as an example. The letter 4 looks most like the letter A, so they were switched and the same is true of 3 and E. So the word “hacker” became “h4ck3r”. This language remained in obscurity, only used when necessary until Doom came. Because of the internet connectivity l33t became pretty common.

that would be impossible since l33t is an ever evolving language with people creating new spellings for words all the time...

Leetspeak is becoming something of a phenomena these days..I was downloading something at FilePlanet and I saw a Dell Computer ad that said something like "Want a great computer with a L33T price?" Swear to sweet Jebus I did.

Anyway, the legend behind "pwn" and all of its variations is thought to have originated from Counter-Strike. Apparently, some moron misspelled "own," which was another creeping slang going around the internet, and everyone must have thought it to be obnoxiously funny and stupid that it's spelled on purpose more often than on accident, for laughs.

Anyways, l33y7 is pretty funny in itself.

"im too mature to type in 1337 that makes me so much better than you i remember back before 1337 existed in 1998 "

Frankly I find this type of player far more annoying than the ones who occasionally say, "pwn3d!!1", when they get a kill sometimes.

Do you really think that publicly stating how much more mature than someone else you think you are makes you better than that person in the eyes of others? Get real. If substituting numbers for letters isn't your cup of tea then just don't do it. Just because someone occasionally does it, (for whatever reason), it doesn't make them an idiot and you know it. If 1337-chat annoys you just ignore it. As repetitive as it may be we don't need your self-righteous rants clogging up chat alongside cries of, "l0l i r t3h pwnz0r3d j00 nub!!1"

Personally, "turrent" annoys the hell out of me, but I'm not going to write a rant about it. If people want to type in 1337 or intentionally mispell words let them. It's not going to hurt you, and chances are your opinion on how someone else should type or speak means next to nothing.
