Yeah, the complete laser concept can still be used exactly how it was suggested, with just replacing 'laser' with 'mobile siege cannon'. Being hand-held, you could also justify it being able to target lifeforms instead of only structures.

But again, the purpose of this concept is for an expensive proto tech that makes one marine very vulnerable, but gives him a far range (30% longer than siege roughly) through-wall weapon whose main purpose is to kill chambers and hive gorges, and deal extra damage to a hive during an attack. And given the weapon's handling characteristics, it would be extremely hard to use it against lifeforms: a slow zoom-in through the walls, and then having the aimer lock (or lower in sensitivity by a lot) for the two seconds before it fires (and making it unable to cancel a fire).

The matter of "realism" is just a matter of finding right technobabble to explain it. I'd call this lazer weapon something like "tachyon beam" or "ghost particle projector." Of course it could just use same tech as the siege cannon, but that's slightly less cool.

This is the kind of <strike>bs</strike> ingenuity that gets things done for games. +1 imaginary rep points for you.
