I'd guess the answer to that question is the same as the answer to "When will the game be out?": When it's ready.
I suppose it depends on how exactly they're approaching it. If they finish enough of the art assets they can cheat a bit by bypassing features that haven't been coded yet, like plopping down building models manually before commander mode or building specific code has been finished, and avoiding things that haven't been completed. I think they talked about something like this in a podcast, vertical slices?

As it's been said, the game won't have any screen shots until it's near completion. However, their are a couple of rough(read: using low quality textures) source maps be developed. i was acctualy exspecting some NSTR alphas about a week ta two weeks back, the momment i heard from the mailing list some people had alpha's i was thinking sweet three days min to make a tiny courner of a room or a segment of coridor for a screenshot.

The mapping community is already on it's way to creating awesome maps. So NS2TR is an alpha verison of NS2? Or it is just a run around and try out the skills and that?

It's a collection of information, art assets, and probably some rough game code to let mappers get to work on maps for NS2 without having the game itself.
I dont even think there is game code, you might get a world spawn, and thats about it. something like 50 textures from three tile sets and about 25 props or some such, was what was said, let me see if i can dig it up but its only too a select few that are a real promising map makeing bunch. tho they prolly ahve already recived a few updates sp they may have afew more textures and props now who knows.

Nex, what you're talking about is the early alpha version of the NS2TR. The released version will probably contain some basic game code as well as considerably more art assets.
