First time playing in a while

<div class="IPBDescription">it was interesting, sad and funny at the same time</div>First off, I haven't played NS in... I don't know, 4 years? Found out a few weeks ago that NS2 is actually in the works so I started reading the forum a bit. And then I got the urge.

So I downloaded it and installed. No problems. Jumped on some random pub, got horribly owned as a skulk/lerk/onos. Aliens won but no thanks to me, wifey got home so I quit as soon as the map was done.

Then I can't sleep, so I decide I will play some more. Jump on a server and end up on the Alien side first. It's 7 minutes into the game and there are no upgrade chambers and only one hive. We got a few fades though but 10 mins or so into the game the rines arrive outside the hive and start tearing it up. Aliens lose. 5 minutes of trying to communicate with the aliens were fruitless. I change servers.

End up on Marines on this server. No upgrades, Aliens have fades and 2 hives. Marines lose. Odd with no upgrades like 10 mins into the game isn't it? What was all the res spent on? I dunno.

We play another, I'm rine again. This time we get some upgrades. Grenades first (snuh? Are these good?) and like 6 mins into the game we get Au1. Once the Aliens start Xenoing our base, we're still at Armor 1 and wep 0. GG.

Ok, so next map (Origin) I get in the CC. Haven't Commed for ages and can't use the mic since wifey is sleeping in the next room but whatever...

I drop IP, Armory, Armslab, 1 RT and get Armor 1. Then I just focus on upgrades. I try to get a siege up on the Aliens 2:nd hive but fail. Not good enough med spam or organisation by me and a bit unlucky marines. Unfortunately I mess up after that and miss that Aliens started the 3:d hive so we're up against level 3 aliens and lose. But at least we lost with 3/2 ups and MT, always something. Still, I think it was my fault we lost.

That was the prologue...

So... Nancy comes on and I decide to Com again (no-one else seems very interested). I drop one IP at base and build an Armory and Armslab in messhall, cap 2 nodes. Some Marines seem to think I am an idiot for "relocating". I can't use VC and can't be bothered to type an essay so I just figure while we're doing OK it won't be a problem.

I get Au1, Wep1, MT yada yada...

We're doing really well. I've locked down a hive and have every node but two capped. Marines are at 3/2 ups, we have MT/PG and the Armory is upgraded. 3 Marines try a raid on the hive and manage to take out some stuff but ultimately die (my med spamming sucks).

I even electrified some stuff with the spare res and equipped pretty much everyone with either Shotties or HMGs. Some marines are in the last hive, Aliens have no higher life forms, it's obviously over. I drop two Armories and a PG in the hive mainly because I've got a bunch of res and nothing to do... and I get ejected.

Marine: Worst COM ever
Me: But... we're winning?
Marine: Only because you got ejected

Didn't knowe whether to laugh, cry, or uninstall.

Instead of hard armslab upgrades, hand out some shotguns and advance the armory. Make sure to hand out shotguns ONLY to the people who don't suck at this game.

Practically every server has its own 'personality'. The server really affects the quality of the games you'll have. But when things go badly, in terms of the game or the people, just laugh it off. Here's a rundown of the active servers:

Guns, you gotta stack aliens to have any chance at a decent game. Seems theres a solid base of regulars who are good and only go marine. You'll also get yelled at the most whether you screwed up or not.

BAD, same size as Guns but it seems to be far more balanced more often. Nicer people too, and an actual admin presence (sometimes).

Jiggly's, small server (bout half the size as Guns and BAD), but very friendly people, often fairly mediocre in skill but they aren't nub. They'll play as a team, enough.

Tactical, 17 players, doesnt fill as much as the others, but it always has a few admins on, and its always really great games. Its a bit crazy though, because aliens win about 3 out of every 4 games, due to the actual organization of the alien team.

NecroPhix, medium sized server (between Jig and BAD), doesnt usually fill but tends to have pretty good games.

There are a couple others, like NS-Game, Able, VH1 etc, but these are usually higher ping for us North Americans, but still acceptable (<150).

Stoney! Win or lose, I'll play under your command ANY day. I just got back into NS a few months back, mainly in the evenings, and I don't like to comm, it's a bit too frustrating anymore. Good to see you though, and I'll be on the lookout for some Stone-commandering. Do you still sport the CoFR tag?
  • StoneburgStoneburg Join Date: 2002-11-11 Member: 8174Members
Hey Rad, good to see you!

Yeah I still sport the [CoFR] tag, although I probably shouldn't, since my performance is likely to think it's an organisation for promoting mentally handicapped people playing online games. I might start playing again (it was interesting to play with a constant 100fps instead of my old 5-20 by the way) but my RL activities take up a lot of time so it won't be anywhere near as often as before.

I was a bit discouraged by the incompetence, and even more so by the hostile attitude, but I do remember what an amazing game this can be if you just get the right players. Hopefully that will happen in the future. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

The thing you miss is that you did not win that game as a commander - your marines did - with a stack. That's all you need to watch for when playing what's left of NS. Look for where the good players always go. If you want to win, just go with the stack. In that one game, you happened to go with the stack.

    Sheesh. Thats horrible, guys.

ALWAYS fight the stack. If you balance it out, it makes for actually *good* games.

Yea if losing was actually fun.

Its not. If you don't stack a team, the game's just going to be a dragged out marine win with prototech (chiefly because most pub commanders like electrifying rts and building many turret factories). Its too much work to win as alien in those cases.

Stix wheres the fun when you are in an alien team where no one drops an RT and 6 guys havent spent their res?
Meanwhile rine team has capped the map and are camping your hive? FUN? ty but no ty.

Problem with current NS is that theres a huge gap between the old timers and players who are new and havent touched anyhting but 24 player siege map.
Of course they are totally lost when its even 8vs8 on a regular map.

I want to play with team that knows whats going on and what is required to do next. And yes indeed that is the stack-team.
NS has lost its fun pretty much.
1 Server remains where is cool playerbase seminice enivorment and some amount of help to newcomers. That is YO-clan on Britain.

    Sadly its faltering too.

    Yours SLizer

too much work? carried as a 0 hive/0 chamber fade to win the game. pubs aren't even remotely challenging anymore.

basically, follow the stack to win and have a good time.

That's because you assume every server is as horrible as BAD, which is thankfully not the case.

    Model stack.

There are more from previous posts (the preeminent <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=101939&st=0" target="_blank">"Interesting Players" thread</a>) to educate yourself:

    <img src="http://img2.putfile.com/main/7/18701480454.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    Here's a failed anti-stack from a while ago:

    <img src="http://img26.picoodle.com/img/img26/8/7/8/f_halflife02m_b75b9ce.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

A successful anti-stack? Nope. I think it failed afterwards.

fading is about timing/positioning/movement, none of which can be provided by cheats.

I'm just saying that I had a hard time getting shots to register on you, not that you were cheating. It might have been lag on my end, or yours, or something else entirely but it was unusual enough that I remembered your name.

And here's a great example of an anti-stack.
    <img src="http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/2271/nseclipse0053rx5.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Now, i completely understand that a lot of the 'elites' can't handle a challenge. They want to just shoot some walker skulks and fades and pat themselves on the back.

When faced with an actually challenge, i.e. an actually balanced game that hinges on a few really important battles... well, when they lose those battles, you know damn well that they're the first ones to rage.

A G4B2S game with a bunch of no-name players on marines is not a stack, nor is your ability to defeat them an anti-stack. But please, have a round of applause and keep up the good work with your heroic efforts on the server.

++Jinx was commanding, so that's even worse for the marines
