Ranks for players (do the damn orders ;) )

<div class="IPBDescription">commander orders important!</div>Okay we know some players don't do the jobs of the commander.
So here is my idea:
You know the commander can give waypoints, weldpoints, attack points, buildpoints and many other stuff.
okay so you know, but why the players not get ranks?
Example(!):

(you don't see the points!)
player arrive Waypoint +2 point
player do weldpoints +3 point
player attack point +2 points
player build a building at point +3 points

You think and for what are this invisible points?
Thats right, you get this points for your next rank and if you higher rank you can take more weapons.
But for the gameplay the commander have a button to activate or deactivate the Ranksystem!

If a marine go to a shotgun and he dont have rank 2, there is a message in red "you are to low rank, do orders and get a higher rank"
Rank up message "good job you do the orders, you get next rank and you can take hmg's"

more examples:
Rank 1 = 6p (mines, grenades, welder) // e.g. build ip and armory at start
Rank 2 = 12p (shotgun) //e.g. build ip and armory at start, 2 x attack aliens, 2x waypoints
Rank 3 = 16p (hmg) // e.g. 3x attack, 5x waypoint
Rank 4 = 22p (gl, heavy armor, jetpack) // e.g. 3x attack, 5x waypoint, 2 x build building
That just a stupid example, maybe its for a better gameplay for the marines and the marines final do the orders...

Keep in mind, all soldiers who build the buildings at start get (build ip, build armory) 6 points so they can have at start mines, grenades and welder, the soldiers who do nothing get nothing.
The other soldiers who go to the waypoints get points for going to waypoints.
<b>This is just an idea and not a whole gameplay idea because i don't know the gameplay of ns2.</b>

I like the idea of ranking systems, I loved the BF2 one a lot (seems NS is compared to BF2 a lot since they have similar mechanics).

However, when you start give rewards and quantify them differently then you get people who instead of feeling inclined to do what they are supposed to and get rewarded for it, they begin instead to find the best way of earning points (spamming ammo bags / health packs in BF2, or whoring a chopper) and just repeat this to earn as much as possible.

then the game is turned into a quest for points and it really detracts from gameplay I feel.

In what sense are they similar? Just curious since I only played BF2 for 15 minutes before it pissed me off <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> (I don't like arcady modern combat)

Anyway I thought this thread was about the commander giving players a rank trough the interface to counter weapon or equipment stealing by players who don't add anything to the game (@sshats and lamers)

Or create custom classes from players to make sure they get the right equipment he drops.

    But don't mind me, I'm already way to off-topic already <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    oh i see, sorry I guess I didn't read it correctly the first time round <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

in this case, you have to be careful since players can join games mid-way (or at very end) and would have 0 rank, and if marines are on a HMG/HA attack, the new guy would be a waste i think?

BF2 is similar in the way its a FPS/RTS vying for control of the map... i guess the similarities end there, but there have been alot of threads with people wanting more of a BF2 rose-menu, squad system, mobile commander, etc <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    What?
    Stealing by players?
If you mean the players will steal weapon from mates, thats imposible, think again...weapons are restrict to player lower ranks.
The point is, you don't need to play 1 hour, if you just build a building or go to waypoints you go up faster the rank 4 as you can say rank <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />
Its NOT like bf2, because in bf2 you need a loong time for all weapons, in this rank system what i mean, you go very fast up if you do the orders.

I nice idea basicly but it should be designed pretty complex because of some problems that would occur.

-As said earlier: point whoring - people just running with the orders and I've been in few games where the comm has give the order to the whole team, while of course only the rines at sensible distance from the task will do it.

-Attacking points would mean that people that are actually good with shooting the aliens down get the good guns, while some not that good won't get the guns. This ain't exactly anyone's fault but "the bad players" won't get some of "all the toys" <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

-Waypoints would have to be by distance because sometimes the comm might give the waypoint right next to the player and it's free points for him then.

I guess the equipment would be given in order from the highest ranking downwards. How about if someone in the ranking order won't go pick up his equip and he's going to stall the other teammates. Also how about if a higher ranking player dies with the equipment and a lower ranking could take it to use right since he's at the same spot? Of course it would be sensible of the ranks would go only for the equip shared at base. Would hate it tho if this would result some teamkilling in the hope of getting your buddy's gun? (hey it would be rare but there are also such morons out there) <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

I was talking in reference to NS1 atm regarding stealing. comm drops weapon in base for player who asked for it, other player goes in and *jonk* weapon gone <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

HA with LMG standing next to a normal rine with HMG is silly. Ofcourse a good comm drops the stuff on a marine if res is scarse.

I still don't like ranks which actually restrics weaponry. Making the game even more dependant on a commander, who then has to use the ingame waypoint systems instead of the voicecomm is not a good system if ya ask me. Even if you can rank up quickly. I just don't like ranks interfearing with gameplay, since ranks can't really be messured accurately in the first place to see if a player is doing stuff the commander tells him to.

Well with a good team comm should have to tell only the overall plan and the marines should see how the plan develops i.e. if there are two fronts advancing they should realize on theirself where to go instead of running a circle at base. Oh how too many times already have I seen comm and even few players yelling people to phase but those guys first want full ammo - as if they're gonna live that long <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
