I've read all the reviews, and I just can't help but feeling that what is good about the game is repetitive and in the end, fairly skill-less. I applaud them for making a complex game that appears to have a low learning curve, but I am not a casual gamer, and I like my games to be challenging.
If you are deciding between a 360 and a PC, then I think the PC is still the clear winner with the exception of 2-3 360 exclusives. Halo is NOT a reason to buy a 360, it is the same old action fps sci-fi shooter you've played through many times before. Halo3 multi-player is good fun, but nothing compared to TF2 on the PC IMO.
To me, the main reason to consider a 360 right now is Mass Effect, and possibly Forza 2 if you like to burn virtual rubber. Other than that it is, IMO, a poor mans PC. If, on the other hand, you want a console to compliment your PC gaming experience, then the 360 is a fine choice. You can get good gaming experience from the type of game you would traditionally shun on your PC. E.g. Sports games, arcade blasters etc.
I haven't played the game but I think you should read the review on penny arcade. I was on the fence but I think I'm going to invest in it once I'm done playing through some other stuff.

I think if a game's main fault is that it becomes boring and repetitive after a little while, playing it for 2 hours and then saying "get it" seems to sidestep the main issue.

It's supposed to be something of a sandbox title, and the repetitiveness comes from strictly sticking to the main story and not doing any side missions. According to PA anyway.
It seems like if it's repetetive only doing the main mission, it can't get less repetetive when you add in more stuff. It just becomes a more enjoyable experience, somehow. Gabe didn't really explain it. He just said it was more fun when you took your time. I guess that's why he's not the writer half of the duo, eh?

I think what he was getting at was that if you speed through it you keep on running into the same things, however when you slow down and do everything ELSE that is part of the game you enjoy it a lot more simply because you are not doing the something over and over. The thing he specifically mentioned was avoiding a combat.

Mass Effect tommorrow!!!!!! WOOOOO!!!! I reserved a copy today even though I'm flat broke, I'm gonna have to trade in GoW, Overlord and pay the difference on my credit card. I know this game is going to be game of the year.
But yeah, I dunno about the 360, if I had the money to upgrade my PC I would get COD4 and Assassin's Creed and all those good games on my PC, however I don't. So right now $60 bucks for a game that runs great on my console is my best bet. That's just me though, if you have a powerhouse PC then I suggest you stick to it. However, if you're a fan of Bioware you know that if you haven't bought a 360 yet you are missing out. Gears of War may have been the reason I bought a 360 but, Mass Effect will be the reason I go even more into credit card debt =P
bump because I can't find a thread on The Darkness, and I don't really want to start one, but I just played through the game and wanted to say *something*. =p
I don't know why the game got so/so reviews. It's the 360 game I've enjoyed the most so far, and the first I've played through to the end (well, the first was Rock Band, if you can consider the Hall of Fame the end)... I liked it much more than Gears of War, for instance. Great gameplay concepts with all the demon powers, interesting (if kitchey) plot, good voice acting, pretty immersive... impaling bad guys, sucking them into black holes, chewing their heads off with the tentacle, sending darklings at them to beat their heads in, devouring hearts - it just didn't get old. the sidequests led to a bit too much traveling around toward the end, and the darklings were a little hard of hearing when it came to doing what you wanted, but besides that, I totally loved the game.
