There's a lot of redundancy and over complication in NS that can be eliminated, which can make getting into the game a lot less confusing.
My biggest gripe is how the gorge builds structures. Sure, you can bind keys to drop certain buildings through the keyboard setup, but how many new players would do that? The alternative is to go through the clumsy/inefficient/buggy popup menu, which quickly becomes a hassle. What I propose is a setup similar to the engineer's in TF2, where you press 4 to open a selection of buildings which you can then select from by pressing a number 1-4. You could then select where in the vicinity it'd be placed instead of it just being plopped down in the direction you're facing.
I'm sure I could think of more but I'm writing this before I sleep so that I won't forget it tomorrow.

Maybe if your quike enough in egg form you can exstend your egg timer by selecting and chaining upgrades. would save a good 2 seconds some times between each egging for each upgrade.
So I go fade then I select clerity and regen while egging to the fade, and it exstends the egging time a little.
For some odd reason they made it so you can be building an OC or MC, then when you are trying to build up an area to stop an offensive, or build up a DC nest for your team, then all of the sudden god forbid you finish building an MC, or you are facing an MC for a millionth of a second while building chambers, then ZAP your back at a hive. NO reason... didn't want to go there... didn't TRY to go there... for since they made one keyboard button have more then one function, now it is a gamble on if you can stay or not.
That also always happens in the heat of battle, right when I am needed the most, for healing or for building chambers. And there is no keybind to stop this! The game only has a "USE" button, which just happens to also build! [bunch of bull###### if you ask me] I would be so happy if we could just seperate those two functions, to two seperate keys. There are like at least a hundred keys on my keyboard. I only use maybe 15 tops when playing. So why not?
i was sure they patched it in a while ago while building a MC if your still holding E at the end you dont teleport but if you reclick E you do?
I would love to see gorges have a much smoother and quicker method of building.
I love the idea of having the upgrade sets for lifeforms, just like the weapon sets in CS:S, you can save your lifeforms and what upgrades you have, and then just push a button and it gets you everything applicable (you could have all three chamber abilities picked out, but if you don't have all three chambers it will still get you the ones for the chambers you do have). This would save a lot of repetitive button pushing (and time!).
for example, you gestate to gorge, and choose carapace, silence and cloak. carapace completes, and your egg gets more armor, incase marines find it and attack. then silence completes and kicks in, so marines cant hear the egg noise. finally cloak completes and kicks in, so marines cant see it. then the gorge finishes gestating and goes about his business.
at the moment if i'm going to egg into a high res alien in a high risk spot, i'll get these upgrades quickly before gestating, so i can hide my egg better. on more than one occasion its saved me a lot of frustration....
if this worked with a single egging wow would it save time.
No, it still happens. And the thing is, it's not like I am sitting there "using" the chamber for a couple seconds after it is already built, then ######ing about it... It happens sometimes like a split/millasecond after the chamber is completed, or if I am building the chamber next to an MC, like a DC [so the DC heals the fade while I also use "gorge heal"] then BAM, back at the hive again. Meanwhile the rest of my team isn't being healed, they are asking me WTF I am doing at the hive, the chamber is not completed, It takes FOREVER to travel back to the other side of the map again, hopefully not getting killed in the process, plus usually by the time I get back to my spot, the aliens have A. Died, B. moved elsewhere to get healing, and/or C. given up on me. All because two completely different functions in a game have to be mapped to the same key? That is seriously retarded...
I know they won't change this for NS1 probably, I doubt they will change anything else at this point, except something major that comes up, but I am only asking that NS2 has the option in the "controls" menu. Please allow people the option to either bind both functions to the same key [esp. for non-gorges], or let me bind a key for each function.
This may just be a thing with me, since I am either playng a marine, or I play a gorge, but just like the game Tribes, I get really heavy into being a gorge and setting up nests in the maps for the rest of the aliens, and this is hurting me, simply because it's not there-
Sorry, I won't speak of this anymore.... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pudgy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::gorge::" border="0" alt="pudgy.gif" />
Having two systems and leaving it to the players personal choice is the best option. Use buttons for rapid drops or popup menu for carfull mouse placement.
The use/build key should stay the same with the exception of having to hold down shift to build. This would prevent the MC issue that also suxs when your not under attack.

It's an (lua) addon from wow called Necrosis that has a lot of similarity to the current one in NS. Also I'd like to add that getting a semitransparent model of the sctructure that you kinda "click" in place (aka engineer from TF2) is a really good idea.
Spy in TF2 has something similar, when you can just click B to redisguise as your previous setting, without having to go through the menu.
if you cant take the time to figure it out, then you are stuck with addons other people make. in which case many a favorite addon will surface and do exsactly what many people want.
Yeah but remeber if your building your probably not moving much as you have to be close to the structure. The most you could be doing is circleing your target to make yourself harder to hit. Reguarless having a shift + use would not screw up your movement.
However, I'm a <i>huge</i> fan of pie menus. This is something I dislike about the TF2 engy/spy menu: 1st it's up in a weapon slot and feels clumsy up there to me, 2nd it's a linear layout. Pie-menus can be so easy and quick to navigate as you get to know them. But otherwise, yeah, the "preview" of what and where you're building needs to be in NS2 if nothing else.
Same with Oc's I think though the Oc should have a really heavy damage front and anything in that arch could takes a heap of damage rapidly
but sort of have a weaker side/behind, but has melee damage also.
It sort of fills the OC's roll built in mind with how the kharaa place them and there roll.
