(if on half-life 2 where do i need 2 install it 2 ?)

NS is a mod for HL.

HL2 or HL:SOURCE wont work.

You need to have a legal steam installed and registered copy of Half-Life.

i put it on but it says it needs a update i update it but then it crashs

We need more information then that.

"i put it on" What? Did you install Half Life 1 via Steam?

"but then it crashes" Again, what? How does it crash? When did it crash? Can you open it again? Is there an error message? what are your system specs? etc etc etc.

Seems like you are not using steam or you are using steam, but used files from the retail installation.
