Downloading as we speak, will play tomorrow (7:24 am atm). I tried this game out close to its initial release, but didn't really get into it. I barely remember anything about the game aside from the basic interface, so I have a few quick questions. 1. Is it possible to act purely as a pirate? By that I mean, is it possible to shoot the living crap out of other ships and loot, and never mine etc? If so, how soon? 2. What race would be best for doing the former, even if it isn't as a primary occupation (if mining etc is necessary). Same goes for ships, any early game ships decent to do so? If possible, I prefer speedy stuff over bulky stuff, even if it's at a slight disadvantage. 3. What's the main difference in types of ships? Do large ships with more guns have the advantage or faster ships that can dodge (?) stuff?

1. You can do anything you want. If you want to be a pure pirate and only shoot other players in lowsec, you can, but you might not be very successful at it as a new player without extensive knowledge of the game, extensive skills, or backup provided by friends. In addition, you may have cash flow issues.
It is entirely possible (and popular)
2. If you want speed over bulk, you want Minmatar. Many of their ships have built-in speed bonus to the ship (such as 5% speed to the ship per level in Minmatar Cruiser). In addition they are the fastest ships in the game by their base speed alone. Minmatar ships also make good pirate ships, but then so do gallente and amarr to some extent. Just don't fly caldari. Talking about specific ships would take up too much time here, so I'll just go with "depends on the situation."
3. Small ships are small, big ships are big. Big ships have big guns that have lots of trouble hitting small ships, but do lots of damage if/when they do. They are also vastly more expensive. They are also much slower as a rule of thumb.
You can be a pirate, but your story will most likely be the one of a typical pirate. You'll cruise around the caribbean, high on life, taking down a merchant here and there, then you'll suddenly run into a large warship that sends you to the bottom of the sea. Any survivors will either be shot or shipped back to London or Bristol and hanged in public.
Just replace the seventeenth-century terms with the appropriate Eve terms instead.

Yo-ho, yo-ho, a pirate's death for you.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
And then you respawn.
In other news, i've managed to set myself up as a moderately successful scrap merchant in 0.0 space, salvaging wrecks that people with REAL ships leave behind. Quite profitable, but a little too reliant on other people being on to produce said wrecks.

1. Look up the systems with most ship loses in 24 hours. 2. Go There. 3. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />? 4. Profit!
Doesn't matter how many ships have been destroyed in the last 24 hours if there arn't any wrecks <i>right now</i> because of this stupid spherical planet and its time zones.
I used to pirate for a living, so I can give some pointers. 1:Ransom peoples ships: It will get you more money then if you just kill them and salvage their stuff. You can usually make 25-50% of their ships worth especially if they don't have insurance. 2: Target noobs flying big ships: Cruisers and battle-cruisers are the favorites rat in for noobs, and can net large ransoms. 3: Assault frigates!: They are small (big ships can't hit you), tough (you get crazy resistances), and pack tons of damage (use tech II weapons). They take awhile to train for, but if you create you character correctly you can start off with most of the skills required at level 4 or 5 making the whole process only take a few weeks at most. They are also pretty inexpensive now, around 8 mil for the ship and 10-11 mil including modules. You can make this back in a single ransom if you are lucky. 4: Choose a backwoods system: A .4 or .3 system with only 1 gate in or out is perfect hunting grounds. Put yourself in their shoes, and find a system you would want to kill NPCs in. 5: Learn to use your scanner: Look it up on the EvE forums, it's pretty easy once you get use to it.
I pirated in a Harpy using 4x Small neutron blaster IIs, which would each hit for 50-70 dmg a shot. It made quick work of almost anything short of a tanked BC and was a tough nut to crack as well.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to hit me up if you see me on (name is in sig) or just post it here.
Not a specific question as such, but I'm really, really bored so I'm getting the trial.
What I'd like is a guide explaining how to create a character and start the game for someone who just wants fun. I don't want to make the most money or get involved in the politics, I just want to have fun which I guess means pirating? (pew pew pew!)
I've yet to play an MMORPG for longer than 2 weeks though, so I'm not getting my hopes up!
If you aren't planning on sticking around: pick a race based on the weapons you like (i'd go for gallente or minmitar), pump perception and willpower, take military->soldier background, load and pew pew
Im playing the trial with a friend and one thing that I dont like so far is how unfriendly this game is for co-op gameplay. We created a fleet but maybe im doing it wrong or this is not the type of game for that. I want to do missions from the agents, together but every time we pick the same mission it sends us to different locations. One mission we were 14 AU from each other. Is there something I need to do so we can do the same mission? Or what other things can we do together?

What you are doing is using two different characters (you and your friend) to each ask for a mission from an agent. The agent sees two different characters and assigns each of them a random mission from his repository. In order to do a mission /together/ you need to have ONE person accept a mission from your agent, and then warp to it's location and be in a gang with your friend so that he can warp to you, while you are at your mission location, and then you can both do your mission together.
When you've completed the mission you can return to your agent and have him split the mission rewards, ISK/Loyalty Points/Standings gain with your buddy.
EVE is all about co-op gameplay. In fact if you try to solo EVE, you're not even playing the same game as everybody else.
Missions are not EVE. Making money from missions and then using that money to buy a nice ship for you and your friends so that you can go into lowsec and kill player pirates, or declare war on another corporation, or form an alliance with likeminded corporations and conquer the galaxy.

This is what I do. I have a level 4 agent and ship (yayy dual repper abaddon) that I keep in the same station at all times. Whenever I'm low in money I just fly out there and run a few missions until I can afford another ship.

I should just come back to play with you Xyth. My character has been around for a couple of years, I have some decent skills lined up. I can pretty much fly most BC/BS and some Assault Friggies <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />.
I also have a second account that is a miner/hauler. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
