I saw the film yesterday, and it was really good. Made me jump quite a few times, too, which got embarrassing because the people behind me noticed and started giggling (it was REALLY LOUD!). Most of the complaints towards the film seem to be based around both the ending and the fact that it differs from the book. Of course it differs from the book. The book would make for one of the most boring films in history. What does Neville do in the book? He drinks, he reads, he looks in a microscope, and he listens to orchestral music at night. That is it. Throw in the dog, Ruth, and the whole ending sequence, and you'd have about 50-60 minutes worth of running time. It makes an interesting read, but it'd be nigh on impossible getting all the inner dialogue which makes the book so interesting onto the big screen. I think they did a great job adapting and updating the story for modern times. Cutting out the part of Neville being a kind of reverse vampire didn't bug me because even in the original story, it kind of comes out of nowhere. "Oh yeah, some of us are still alive using magic pills that came from... somewhere, and we hate you. K."
About the grenade thing.... <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>Neville in this story is an ex military scientist. He's hardcore. His house has several layers of defence, and he's obviously very organised. There's at least one loaded gun in each room, others hidden about the place, and he seems to have explosives lying around too (see that part where he shot a container to blow the head monster out of hiding? Yeah). Is it that hard to believe that he hadn't planned for a last ditch defence in his lab, and stashed a load of explosives down there? Why else would he have a single grenade just lying in the drawer of his desk? And hell, he's a smart guy, and it's in the future. Maybe it's a napalm grenade. There are packs of vampire mutant things leaping around the place. Futuristic napalm grenades make as much sense.</span>
I do agree about the ending, though. <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>It was as if, when they were writing the last few pages of the script, "Signs" happened to come on TV as they were watching, and they just copied it.</span> Although that being said, I can't really think of any other way they could've ended it without it being a huge downer (which just doesn't sell well on the big screen, I guess). Seemed like they were trying to cram too much storyline into such a (relatively) short runtime too, what with the head monster thing.
Oh and.... people... the dummy's name is Fred, not Frank. I know this is a running joke on 4chan, but this ain't 4chan.

Pathetic ending indeed: <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>They couldn've done something with the intelligence of that zombie leader guy, show Robert Neville cured the female zombie, or he could've thrown the 'nade through the glass opening. Also, almost no zombie ass kicking, and why didn't he put his dog in quarantine in the first place? Could be because I'm not sensitive enough or something. Whole movie seemed...brainless. </span> Weak story, good acting, reasonable action, lame ending.
I'd recommend reading the book. Will Smith isn't quite up to acting the character that Matheson created (his "crazy" acting when he went back into the rental store had my giggling), but then again, the book is entirely different (less action, more introspection). Takes an impressive writer to make Neville's mental state more engrossing than the vamps knocking on the window.

The vampires hate garlic, crosses and mirrors. They just taunt Neville from outside his house and they have their own little society going. That's damn lame and not scary; but vampires are lame and not scary, luckily in the film they're more along the lines of zombies. And zombies rule.

If the book is anything like the plot summary of the book on Wikipedia, I'll pass. It's probably one of the most awful ideas. Ever.
It's all about him coping on his own and going slightly head-wrong. It's really good, seriously.
