Gamma/Brightness and Microphone settings not retained in Vista

So let's start from the top.

I'm running Vista on this machine;

(CPU) AMD Athlonâ„¢ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ (512KB L2 Cache, Socket 939) @ 2009MHz (194MHz FSB)
(Video controller 1) NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX (Processor: GeForce 7800 GTX), 256MB, 1600x1200x32, 85Hz, driver version: 7.15.11.6375
(Motherboard) DFI Corp,LTD LP NF4 SLI-DR Series, version 1.0
(Operating system) Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Ultimate, version 6.0.6000
(RAM) 2GB DDR

and the first problem I came across was of course the cl_gammaramp thing. I fixed that by doing cl_gammaramp 0 in console and sure enough, my graphical problems disappeared. However now everything is really dark, so to make everything brighter, I go into my Gamma/Brightness options, but the sliders are all the way at max already!

I set both sliders all the way to minimum to see if that does anything, but when the game restarts after you apply the settings, the sliders are still at maximum. I made a userconfig.cfg file and I have these lines in there:

brightness "5"
gamma "5"
lightgamma "3"

But it's still way too dark. Please help. If you need any more info please ask, I really would like to solve this problem.

Oh yeah, before I forget, I have the same problem with my microphone settings. My transmit volume slider is at maximum. every time I try to turn it down, I hit apply and it's just back at maximum again..

If we could keep the 'uninstall vista/install xp' comments to a minimum I'd appreciate it as that's not an option at this time, and besides, that's the easy way out.

    Try tweaking texgamma and lightgamma.
If that fails, adjust your monitor/video card's brightness/contrast.

Vista64 is a pretty good O/S now. I have 4 processors, 4 gigs of ram, and a 28" monitor and will probably upgrade more. XP doesn't scale properly to that much resources.

I don't use the microphone much so can't help you there. However, for your gamma problem I fixed it using http://www.pantone.com/pages/products/product.aspx?pid=79, which is a color correcting device that vastly improves LCD's ability to render colors, gamma, and brightness properly. Previously, I always had some gamma problems even on XP. With Vista64 it was necessary to get this device. I am really happy with it, and now view it as necessary.

So, in addition to fixing your gamma problems in game, with this device you will improve texture & color rendering for gaming and non-gaming quite a bit. Do any online shopping and find the colors aren't what you thought you bought? What about photoshop?
