Issues with "Buttons"

I reinstalled the game after being away for a year, and I have a new computer to boot: Intel Core 2 Quad Core 2.4 1066FSB with a GeForce 8600GTS PCIe card.
I noticed that "buttons" such as all comm buttons, alien progression bars, etc, are completely "blackened." Also, when logging on, I get a message saying "Display not available in downloadable gam (yes gam)." I've tried D3D and OpenGL both, and I receive the same results.
Finally, if I can get this fixed, can someone link me to a thread containing tips on how to maximize performance? With so few graphics options in game, I know I'm not even making my computer break a sweat.
