Hey, another PC help thread, I am sorry. I have a PC that won't connect to the internet, it won't even get an IP from the router or ping anything. I know the wired connection is working as I can plug it into a laptop and it works fine. I replaced the NIC which did not help and I finally did a full format and reinstall of windows which did not help as well. Any ideas on what else to try? The PC seems fine otherwise.

More info please.
WHat I could grasp is that:
you have a PC, that can connect to your router through a ethernet connection, but cannot connect when you use a wireless connection.
Check the following:
Move the PC close to the router (2 meters)
Are the router wireless standards compatible with the PCs NIC standards.
latests nic drivers
router mac filter disabled
router dhcp slot free
dynamic dhcp enabled
correct encryption and ssid entered into the the pc network config
other nics disabled
bridging off at the pc
are you connecting to your network or are you trying to access your neighbours secured wlan (again check the ssid)
These are all of the typical errors I an think of atm.
My question:
Do you have the LAN software/drivers installed for the computer?
If so then you should see a LAN under Start -> Settings -> Network Connections
If that is not there then you are missing the info for your NIC(s) and that is your problem, And likely can be solved either by installing the drivers or components from the Windows install CD (can't remember atm tbh)
AH k, I seem to have misread that.
Ok, let me see:
-Are the Router and the NIC compatible? (Router has only an integrated 1GB hub, but NIC is a 10/100 card etc)
-Are the correct NIC drivers installed?
-Router setup: Mac filter and dhcp settings
-Is the cable compatible? (cad5 for 100mbit, cad6 for 1gbit) (is it a twisted pair or a crossover?)
-Is the card correctly installed? enter "ipconfig /all" into the command prompt to find out
-Make sure you disable all other network connections (especially those pesky firewire connections)
-Does the cable plug into your pc? (some cables have a strange guard, preventing them from being plugged in, if the NIC is in the lowest PCI slot)
-If it is an onboard NIC, make sure that it is enabled in the BIOS.
Good luck.
Is the router a d-link router perchance? I have a similar problem where I can't get an IP when connecting wirelessly. I have to hard reset the router about once a day.
