You don't have the correct file then.

Go Here. And follow the directions EXACTLY (yes, I mean exactly, don't skip one because it isn't working or you know better, follow the directions.)

If you run into problems then tell us exactly what step and exactly what the error was (error messages or what not).

Well i did follow the instructions the first time around and did just what it said. I already have HL installed from a while ago and i downloaded the NS installation like 20 times and tried it but none of them are 156 MB like u claim it to be and i don't get any errors. Its just that when i start installing it it doesn't give me a directory to install into so I'm not sure where its supposed to go. Also i tried installing it into many different folders and none of then resulted in NS showing up in steam as a third party game. I mean i had NS before but i reformatted my computer and lost everything and I'm trying to get them back but apparently NS is not working for me.

hmph

So you recently formated your computer?
You installed Steam and HL1 after formating the computer?

Then when you run ns_install_v32.exe it does what EXACTLY? If the first thing it pops up is a message saying "Setup has not detected a valid steam install, do you wish to continue anyway", then you don't have steam and/or HL installed. (and should have told us about said error message)

That is the only thing (outside of a corrupt install) that I can think of that would cause that problem.

Did you happen to simply reinstall windows with out doing a format? Or possibly format your windows' drive/partition and have Steam installed somewhere else?

If so that is your problem. Steam is no longer 'installed' as your registry has no knowledge of the program. You could try and manually direct the installer to:
Drive:\Path\Steam\SteamApps\YourID\half-life\
And see if that works, though, I would honestly just suggest for you to reinstall Steam at this point any way.

You cannot.

NS uses the GldScr engine. Not the Src engine :=)
