Starting a server from scratch

Ok for the past hour or so i've been searching on the net on a how to start a server from scratch, i realize ports need opening and patches need downloading and so on.
I found out that the Router that i use (Motorola SB5100) is a model and the ports are delt with by the firewall (i'm pretty sure thats what they meant), i turned my firewall off (on my computer) and tried getting people to join to my server, no one could see it; so i tried downloading the server dedicated patch 3.0.5 and put that in my ns/dll's folder... it wouldn't even let me attack or change weapons so wrong idea i'll take it.

Can anyone help me at all?

    Go check out the server forum, there are a few guides about exactly what you need to run a server.

    I forgot about that forum... anyways i took a look around and all the links that were given to starting an ns server from scratch were all broken.

    Any other ideas?
