Natural Selection Clone?
<div class="IPBDescription">Just found something...</div>...while I was looking at HL2 mods on moddb.
<a href="http://www.moddb.com/mods/6812/intelligent-design/" target="_blank">http://www.moddb.com/mods/6812/intelligent-design/</a>
The mod is called "Intelligent Design"
<!--QuoteBegin-Intelligent Design+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Intelligent Design)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->...is a HL 2 Multiplayer mod that pits two teams against each other in a First-Person-Shooter/Real-Time-Strategy game. The two teams play very differently while having a core focus of teamwork and communication as their cornerstones. The SNS are the ranged/technology based team, focusing on a central command point, with a single player who is voted at round start being the 'commander' of the team; this player has a top-down RTS style view, and is the true director of his team's actions in the round. The Feral are the melee/organic based team, featuring individual technology trees per-player, and no 'commander' player, focusing instead upon a group interaction and communication. Each team's main objective is to control more territory than their opponent by capturing 'nodes' on the map that supply resources used for increasing technological prowess; ultimately pushing their opponents back to their starting node and destroying it and their means of spawning.
It's the future, humanity has continued to grow and develop. Nano-technology is in use in almost every facet of life. ...<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Nanotech. Resource 'nodes'.
Asymmetrical gameplay. One side (range+technology) with a commander, the other (melee+organic) with separate tech trees. <b>*ehem*</b>
Hell, even the <b>name</b> seems like a parody of "Natural Selection" - "Intelligent Design". Haha ;P
I'm not saying you should go in and start flaming them - I hope that you don't. I'm not even sure how much of the "copying" was intentional - though the extent is kind of.. suspicious. ;P
'Just thought I'd bring it up since I found it amusing / it caught my interest.

PS. If this amuses you I feel sorry for you when you swallow your gut and play their finished product.
Me too.
They were fun.

It's still going. It posted a news update a week ago.
I can't even remember anything about them tbh, other than some amusing rages they had against NS.
I think that even with all the freedome modding has on source, NS2 has more (still not saying much). Also wasn't ID's motto "more RTS with ns1.04 elements" as a response to NS2.0 -- 3.2 fast paced action?
Sure they have the same idea for a game, but that doesn't mean they are going to be the same. I'll pass my judgement when both are done...
[edit]
Also if the frikking search on this forum actually had some options I could show ya the original topic, without going trough a bazilion of pages when I just want to search on topic title. Or did I miss something <img src="http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/style_images/1/folder_post_icons/icon5.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />
I thought he meant something different, since he was asking for the name. Besides, I don't think the ID team deals in insulting NS. That'd be very unlike them.
And yes, ID wants to return to the roots of NS, with the slower, more deliberate pace.
Yup. I think this mod I'm thinking of started attacking Monse (I think it was monse.....) for being a "paid marketing professional" and that NS wasn't good they just threw money at it to promote it etc... They also had a thing about insulting the screenshots of NS on the website, including one of an onos where it's sticking half into a wall.
I can't even remember if they were a troll group or a real mod, but they were fun. I'm fairly sure it was before ID was around, too.
Aaaaah, man, that brings back memories. So long ago... now I remember, though.
Heh. Good times.
Thaaaaaaaaaat's the one. They were fun.
NS isn't a clone any more than you and I are clones.
NS happens when an FPS and an RTS love each other very much...

Like Gloom.
I prefer to see Gloom as sort of an unexpected pregnancy which is brought to term, and the parents aren't really ready to raise the kid, but then they have another kid when they're ready, which is NS. And Tremulous is the red-headed stepchild.
Amen bro. (seeing as I was an avid participant of that particular forum durring that time) <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> Too bad he doesn't hang around here much any more. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
Well, fair enough.
why? gloom is by far the most advanced mod made for quake 2 on the default engine, most port engines are built to enhance the looks of gloom, not so much quake 2 itself. Its also what helped shape the idea of natural selection as to how well a melee vs ranged fps combat system would work out. Its also how i found out about natural selection early.
Sad to see team rxn pretty much dead, i miss the fun chats i'd have with the devs. Although tremulous was fun, i dont think it quite lived up to gloom or natural selection. The quake 3 engine was too limited (HUGE issue was models cant have shadows cast on them) for the type of game play, plus the lack of good view weapons and depth seemed to sort of kill it. Makes a awesome freeware game though.
Edit: BTW, If you're interested in what our game design plan is ATM/What's similar/different from NS, we have a public wiki out with a lot of gameplay/design info available <a href="http://www.idmod.net/wiki/" target="_blank">here</a>.
Err, anyways, uhm, what did they do that was bad again? I never saw any bad mouthing, but then again I just looked at screenshots, daydreamed the co-op concept, then went back to doing something else.
edit: Ew, that trailer for it was absolutely nasty and reeked of 12 year old.
Then what you need, good sir, is <a href="http://www.killingfloor.freedomsnet.net/2/kf20/index.html" target="_blank">Killing Floor</a>. A UT2K4 mod, it's co-op vs. waves of zombies, and ammo conservation is critical. Not too many people still play it online on a regular basis, but it's the most fun I've ever had at a LAN (besides NS).
