Conecting a Fan to the PSU AND MOBO

Hi, I am currently building a new PC and I do have a little question regarding my fans.

I have a chassis fan, that is a little bit weird (came with the chassis)

<a href="http://img297.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0020yu9.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/5664/img0020yu9.th.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>
As you can see ground and 5V are going through the 4 pin and the rotation control is going through the small 3 pin.

Now for the big question: I want that particular fan by the controlled by the Mobo, but I dont want to use several adapters, so thta I get ground 5v and rotate on the same small 3 pin.

Can I simply plug the small 3 pin into the mobo (the wire will then connect to the rotate pin on the mobo) and the 4 pin into the PSU?

The idea behind my thinking here is that the Fan will get juice directly from the PSU, but because the rotation cable is connected to the mobo it will be controlled by it. (Which makes kinda sense, cause I am not connecting it to the PSUs fan slots, but instead to a normal Molex slot) Does it even work? I am mainly asking, because the easiest way to control a fan is to change the amount of juice running through it and the mobo cannot really know what the PSU is doing when using the suggested setup.

PSU: Be quiet Dark Power Pro
Mobo: Asus Maximus Formula
Fan: Silverstone something, that came with the TJ09

Last I checked, the yellow wire only carried a signal from the fan to a fan controller. A simple (cheap) fan controller is just a variable resistor (POT) on the +5V and straight-through on everything else.

    Yeah, I know.
My question is: Can I connect the "fan control" wire to the MOBO and the ground and 5v directly to the PSU? And will the MOBO still be able to control the fan if I do so?

Yes. That's the whole reason they give you the two plugs.

Maybe the pic is bad but it looks like the fan power cables are hooked to the 12 v (yellow) line.

I just checked and of course: You are right.

The black cable is the ground and the red one is hooked up so that it will meet a 12V line of the PSU. I didnt really thought about it in the first place and so just assumed that red=5V -> fan running at 5v <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
