<div class="IPBDescription">Thinking about virtualizing my XP under Ubuntu</div>I am thinking about converting my Win XP into a Virtual O/S running under my Ubuntu. But I have read that games running under a VM O/S will use a virtual generic video card and not the actual card. So does this mean I will have problems running NS/Steam in a VM XP <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

Are there workarounds ?

Or can I hope of simply running my NS under Wine or something in my Ubuntu ?

I think your answer is running steam/hl via wine. I know someone who plays NS this way and he claims he actually gets better framerate than on windows.

    I <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pudgy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::gorge::" border="0" alt="pudgy.gif" /> under Linux with Vector Linux 5.9 Gold (= slackware 12) with kernel 2.6.24

With Wine I have problems, something about winbind, a part of samba, but since some libs are screwed
    on my system i'm not looking for a solution and i'm lazy <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I use Crossover for Linux, it's not payed yet so I backup and reinstall every week - lol.

I'm forced to game thru the opengl driver cuz with d3d some txt and textures are missing.

If I play classic in 640x480 fullscreen I start with an fps around 40 and at the end of the game it's about 10 fps.
For now I play in 1024x768 windowed and I start with an fps of 99 and end up with around 40.

I managed to easily install Windows-XP with all the updates under Ubuntu 7.10 using Virtualbox. However, I was disapointed when after having installed Steam, I could not even play Half-Liffe1 in OpenGL nor Direct3D. I am stuck in software mode. I had install the additional WIndows drivers supplied by Virtualbox but that didn't help. I also tried installing HL2 but it goes back to the desktop right away so nothing pops up in the window. The only game I have manged to install in XP Virtualbox is Starcraft but I cannot get it to full screen. It just goes totaly black or has garbage graphics on it.

So I am at the point where if no one is pointing for fixes, I will have to stay with a dual boot : XP + Ubuntu.

That sucks. I want to move awy from WIndows.

There is also Cedega which is a branch off of Wine and it is reporting alot of running games but you have to pay $5 per month to keep using it.

I wish I knew more to help you. Have you tried communication with the programmers of Wine and Crossover?

Use wine to play it, I currently run Ubuntu and can play steam games fine.

    To bring back the subject <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

On a sunny morning while a was still sleeping my 4 year old kid discovered the reset/power buttons on my pc, I had an unrecoverable system/kernel crash on my previous distro so I gave up on reinstalling and compiling kernels and so on...

I downloaded the latest Mandriva Spring (2008.1) and it works fine, great os for a desktop linux

Wine & Wine-Doors runs perfectly, Steam runs perfectly, no errors, I game NS in fullscreen 1024x768 with OpenGL.

    stuff needed:
    - a good distro with good support
    - samba, libs & winbind installed properly (if possible use the distro's package manager)
    - latest wine & wine-doors (if possible use the distro's package manager)
    - tahoma.ttf (can be installed with wine-doors) and some others if needed
    - gecko (also with wine-doors)
    - directx 9 (also with wine-doors)
    - some other software that wine-doors offers for better working
    - install & update steam.exe (or .msi)
    - install HL1 & NS
    - edit NS launch options: -w 1024 -h 768 -gl -dxlevel 90 -heapsize 512000 (basic config for a fullscreen game)
    - beer/spliff and start a game <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    I could not install the tahoma.ttf and Steam with wine-doors, yes, errors <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> I did it manually, it works well.

For more game launch options see: <a href="https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9257-TUJL-7421" target="_blank">https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article...=9257-TUJL-7421</a>

    [edit]

My configs worked fine the same day, but today not one of the games could be launched, due... I don't know why or what, but... if I set the -sw option then
the game will start in windowed mode, in options I disabled the window mode and it switched to fullscreen.
Starting the game with -fullscreen had no effect, so whenever this happens I guess starting with -sw can help a bit.

If someone has the same error with another solution then please be free to help the community <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
