Alien Welder?
Could the aliens use dynamic infestation to block paths the way marine use welders? A gorge "weapon" or maybe a side effect of the health spray that encourages infestation to grow in a particular area and a secondary fire mode that encourges infetation to receed from or keep clear of an area.

That's interesting, waypoints encouraging infestation growth. I hope player presence will passively affect infestation growth. Ie: a lot of marines in an area will hinder growth and a corridor often traveled by kharaa will grow quickly infested.
So basically D.I. infesting is being the opposite of welding a func_weldable?
That would be cool if it was reverse-able because then you'd have a whole new dynamic of welding vs. infesting over an important control panel. Perhaps if it's infested marines have to burn the infestation off with the flamethrower before welding?
to that specific notion:

Now the aliens have a commander of their own surely this means they will have their own waypoints too. I was just picturing the DI gradualy following the waypoints set by the alien commander, so that the more the aliens work together in an area as a team the more infested it gets. This feels like a really inutative, natural way in which the infestation would progress.

That could really help D.I. look normal if mappers could place info_DIwaypoint or have textures which infest / can't infest.
D.I. is really complicated, thus why UWE is going to try to get it to work with no certainty guarantee.
