Linux issues

<div class="IPBDescription">crashes within seconds</div>I'm currently running ubuntu linux as a wubi install - I gave up with 8.04 as there were some terrible graphics issues ("blinking" to the main menu several times a second), and have now dropped back to 7.04 which appears to work very well - i'm not sure what changed to cause the gfx corruption - perhaps the eye-candy desktop isn't as stable as you'd hope ?!?

Anyway... i've installed Steam using wine and wine-doors, and can play the original HL happily for hours without a crash, but within seconds of loading NS and joining a server, it locks the system.

It locks completely, and I have to REISUB out or force a reboot by holding the power button.

My last attempt had me running around a combat map on a local server as alien for a minute or so - the longest i've been able to keep it working - but as soon as I swapped to marine, it locked out again within seconds (3-4 secs max). This seems to be relatively consistent, and did it with Cedega and Crossover Games while testing under 8.04

Some people suggested picking a specific sound system within wine to get it working right (OSS IIRC) but I get the same with that too (as I do with any of the audio systems offered). It also happens under software rendering as well as opengl, which would appear to rule out the graphics card / drivers etc.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this would be greatly appreciated :-} (sadly i'm not particularly au-fait with linux, although i'd gladly move to it as soon as I can sort this little problem out !)

FWIW i've revisited this issue a few months on, this time using a clean install of Ubuntu 8.10 and the rather nice full-version Codeweavers Crossover Games giveaway they ran on 28th Oct.

Still seeing the same problem unfortunately, seems solid in HL itself though :-(
