It seems that Cory Strader made quite a buzz with his new hive design back in January. (forgive the pun) One of my favorite parts of that picture was the "Glowies" or "Floaties"- the larvae of the Kharaa. But I saw a problem with the one in the front. It had too many legs to credibly metamorphose into a skulk. This is my redrawn version. I also changed the structure of the front legs to appear more like the skulks'.

I don't think we plan on having the glowies turn directly into skulks. They'll most probably turn into eggs first.

    goo

When bugs change into butterflies they only leave their nervous system more or less intact and the rest is "melted" and reassembled. So it doesn't matter really how many legs it has at a particular stage - the same could go for Kharaa.

Well, when I saw the concept I thought that their little mantles would turn into the 'shells' (are they really shells anyway?) of the egg. That would mean the eggs were translucent, and you would be able to see the developing skulk inside. But I suppose they could turn opaque as soon as they turned into eggs.

Hey, that's an idea. Seeing the developing skulk inside the egg from outside.

I think one of the objectives with glowies metamorphosing into eggs is to obscure which eggs are real skulks, so as to reduce the effectiveness of spawncamping.

All of the eggs could look like they have skulks in them, but not all would hatch.
