Custom Decals

I was thinking that custom decals would be a pretty cool option. For instance the ability to have your own uploaded design work as a decal on perhaps the shoulder, chest or back of a Marine as well as an option for Aliens. Besides just being cool and giving a gamer a greater identity, they would also act as a visual aid for teammates and even possibly be capable of giving enemies an intimidation factor while they come face-to-face with their nemesis.

So.... kinda like pimping your army in DoW?

I'm personally against too much personalization of your avatar. Games like Battlefield or the custom cameo for Rainbow Six Vegas 2 are to make you unique. NS feels like a game where you're not supposed to be unique. You're a cog in the massive war effort.

I do however like minor customization, such as the suggested different faces and gender that the devs have talked about. It helps make the game feel more personal. What I don't want is twenty different colored Marines running around from dark brown to bright magenta. This isn't Halo.

I think you have the wrong idea Spellman. It would only be a small decal on the Marine. Not a completely different colored marine like in Rainbow Six.

The only thing I could think of that is wrong with this idea is that people would upload porn pictures on their characters, and I don't see how it would work for Aliens.

I have thought of people using porn, sure. You could eliminate that problem by making sure the size of the decal is limited properly.

About the Aliens, sure, doesn't seem logical, or does it? Think of them as tattoos, battle scars or just be creative. If some thought was put forth, it wouldn't seem so odd.

I'm not talking Quake Deathmatch skinning here, just small artistic touches to give gamers a uniqueness.

Thank you for sharing your opinions.

Yeah, I guess if they are small, people might not be able to make out what the picture is...

Which could also be a problem...

If you're aiming to be negative, why not take it some place else, I can understand your frustration having no one respond to your t-shirt thread and all.

Obviously, they'd be limited to proper dimensions. The idea is kickass and will be done in future games whether in this game or another, period.

What? I'm not trying to be negative at all...

And it's fine that no one responded to my t-shirt thread. If they don't want to, they don't have to reply to it.

I'm not going to go into someone else's thread and flame it up or whatever.

I'm just saying that if the decals are too small, people won't be able to see what they are. I would love to see decals on characters.

    Sorry.

So you're going more along the lines of the the decals on the DoW units. Their ensignia on their shoulder pads or whatnot.

As I said before, keep it small enough and I'm good. If it's plastered on their chest plate, it might be a bit much. And no no no complete re-skins.

I too would like to see some little customization possibilities for players.

First of all I'd like to see somethig similar to the good old HL spraypaints. It might not be realistic but it's fun (also you now have markings on the MASC so why wouldn't bored Marines scribble something on the wall? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />)

A custom Icon/picture on the scoreboard could be nice (people tend to recognize pictures much better than player names).

When it comes to the ingame models I'd like to choose from different genders and skins/helmets (open visor, closed visor, eye patch, zigarr in the mouth...) and have a little decal (likely a smaller version of the scoreboard Icon) on your shoulder (DoW-style). The overall look of a marine team with UNIFORMS would be preserved but we'd have some small customisation (like the stickers and things the soldiers decorated their helmets with during the vietman war).

As for the Khaare I'd like to see a small set of skins to choose from that differ a little bit in colour and/or pattern (some more green-ish, other more brown-ish). The skinset would be used automaticall for every lifeform.

The game is about teamwork, but every players wants to have the feeling to be a little special... let's give it to them. Also being easier to identify ingame might be positive for cumminity feeling?

I can up with alittle idea in my head ago, having a little scroll bar in the 'Multiplayer' section of options, mulitple scroll bars, one for damage style, how badly damaged you're marine/alien looks, another skin tone, and then you get a selection bar to select insignias/markings. the damage one might be too hard to implement, many textures, but the others seem easy.

I think along with some of the great things NS2 comes with, a streamlined Model Editor and Skin Editor would be nice, that way people can select different custom skins from the options menu, and make them themselves! =P
