Vista-Black screen starting problem

My problem is simple to explain. I am using a laptop which utilizes vista and i believe my laptop is 64 bit. Basically i can play cs source. But i decided to restart playing NS so i downloaded it as well as cs 1.6 When i installed and restarted steam i tried to play on them. The 'starting natural selection/ counter strike' box appears and then the screen changes to the main menu background. The screen then goes black and stays black. The mouse pointer is shown but it is shaped as the loading pointer ( or sand timer shape if u use XP). Anyway to fix this so i can actually reach the main menu screen? Soon i swear ill <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/asrifle.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::asrifle::" border="0" alt="asrifle.gif" /> the dam thing
oh forgot to mention that when i go to task manager the game is not responding for some reason
