<div class="IPBDescription">(let me watch replays)</div>Replays are a critical aspect to learn from games played. A replay would enable commanders and players be able to see what they did wrong, and more-so see what they could have done better. (They would see that a certain hive was unoccupied at a certain time. They will learn timing with chambers and gorge buildings. Vice versa, aliens will be able to know when +1 weaponry is upgraded, which might be the time they drop DCs.)
This will create a hierarchy of strategy (like in Starcraft) which will evolve good strategies and counter strategies. This will give the game a more competitive edge, I think.
Obviously a replay function includes omniscience (both teams are shown completely) and the ability to analyze everything. There should be a play speed (normal, x2, x4, x8, x16) and a current position bar (like when playing a song - you can skip from 1:30 to 6:20 in 1 click). Look at the Starcraft replay function. Look here for the example: <a href="http://eddie.niese.net/images/StarCraft.gif" target="_blank">http://eddie.niese.net/images/StarCraft.gif</a>
I know SC is a 2d game, but if the observer moves a certain distance from the map (so it is completely visible) he sees little Onos / marine / skulk symbols moving around. He could also click on all alien / marine buildings to see the state of their upgrade. He could see what all marines are carrying and their kill count (per that life). He could see the currently selected weapon of the alien (because they don't have weapon models). He could see HP/Energy. Everything. He is omniscient.
Not only that, but good games could be posted on the internet and become immortal. Good commanders, good alien players, good marines would distinguish themselves with proof of gameplay. A larger internet community would be created. Information will be shared by these replays, creating a higher level of strategic gameplay. People can watch a replay in awe of skill. Hype will accompany them.

For the new engine, this functionality would be a plus.
It would be nice if the full scale replays could be made without the HLTV system and allow the viewers to see the commander point of view. Something to sync up the higher ping demos would also be nice, it's annoying and confusing to see marines tracking 3m behind an alien.
